Classic Elite Yarns Viewpoints Artistic Differences - Silve Fingerless Gloves

What Is Being Made

Silve is a pair of nicely fitted fingerless gloves (also called mitts) designed by Talitha Kuomi and originally published in Artistic Differences in collaboration with Classic Elite Yarns. These gloves are worked seamlessly from the wrist up and can be worn on either hand since the mitts are identical. The pattern offers two distinct versions: the Boho version featuring a single color, and the Rocker version with contrast edgings and optional striping throughout.

Techniques Used

The Silve gloves are constructed using several key knitting techniques:

  • Bottom-up construction: The gloves are worked from the wrist upward, allowing for easy length adjustments and a natural fit progression.
  • Seamless, worked in the round: Using double pointed needles, the entire project is worked circularly without seams, creating a smooth, professional finish.
  • Stripes: The pattern explicitly notes that these gloves could easily be striped by alternating two rounds of main color (MC) with two rounds of contrast color (CC) throughout the stockinette sections.
  • Wrist shaping: Strategic decreases are worked to create a nicely fitted wrist that tapers from the initial cast-on.

Stitches Used

The Silve pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for an intermediate skill level:

  • Stockinette stitch (St st): The primary fabric stitch used for the main body of the gloves, creating a smooth, classic appearance.
  • Garter Rib: A custom stitch pattern worked over a multiple of 5 stitches, combining knit and purl stitches in a structured rib. This pattern alternates between a knit-3, purl-2 round and an all-knit round, creating texture and elasticity ideal for the wrist cuff.
  • Decreases: Knit 2 together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases are used symmetrically for wrist shaping.

Materials and Specifications

The Silve gloves are designed to be worked with specific materials and tools:

  • Yarn: MountainTop Vail by Classic Elite Yarns, a blend of 70% baby alpaca and 30% bamboo viscose. Each 50-gram hank provides 236 yards. The Boho version requires 1 hank in color 6416 Parchment, while the Rocker version requires 1 hank each of color 6475 Slate (MC) and color 6477 Charcoal (CC).
  • Needles: Double pointed needles in US sizes 1 and 2 (2.25 and 2.74 mm), or size as needed to obtain proper gauge.
  • Additional materials: Stitch markers for tracking rounds and a stitch holder or scrap yarn for securing stitches.
  • Gauge: 39 stitches and 53 rounds equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch using the larger needles. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure proper fit.

Sizing and Finished Measurements

The Silve pattern is available in five sizes ranging from extra-small to extra-large:

  • XS, S, M, L, and XL to fit wrist circumferences of 5½, 6½, 7½, 8½, and 9½ inches respectively
  • Finished wrist circumference measurements of 4¼, 5¼, 6¼, 7¼, and 8¼ inches
  • Finished length of 8 inches across all sizes

Pattern Difficulty and Construction Notes

Rated as an intermediate skill level project, the Silve gloves require competence with working in the round on double pointed needles and understanding basic shaping techniques. The pattern is worked from the wrist up, with the initial cast-on at the wrist edge and shaping decreases worked to create a fitted silhouette. The flexibility of the design allows knitters to customize their gloves with striping or choose between the simple Boho version and the contrast-edged Rocker version.
