Cullen Sweater in MODE at Rowan Softest Alpaca

What is Being Made

Cullen is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Quail Studio. This pullover garment is available in ten sizes, ranging from 71-76cm (28-30 inches) to 152-157cm (60-62 inches) chest fit, with actual finished chest measurements from 89cm (35 inches) to 171cm (67¼ inches). The sweater features a classic construction with ribbed neckband and colorwork patterning throughout the body.

Techniques Used

The Cullen sweater employs several intermediate knitting techniques. The garment begins with a ribbed neckband worked on smaller needles to create a fitted edge. The main body is constructed using colorwork stockinette stitch, which requires managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously while maintaining even tension and stitch gauge. The pattern uses a 48-row repeat chart that is worked throughout the body pieces. Shaping is incorporated at the front neck with strategic decreases worked over multiple rows, and shoulder shaping is achieved through cast-off stitches at regular intervals. The construction method involves working separate front and back pieces that are later assembled.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbed stitch (K2, P2): Used for the neckband to create elasticity and a finished edge
  • Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch for the body, worked in the round or flat depending on construction
  • Colorwork stockinette stitch: Stockinette stitch worked with multiple colors following a chart pattern, creating the decorative design element of the sweater
  • Decreases: Single stitch decreases worked at the front neck edge to shape the neckline
  • Cast-off stitches: Used to shape the shoulders by binding off groups of stitches at the beginning of rows

Materials

The Cullen sweater is knitted using MODE at Rowan Softest Alpaca yarn, a luxury fiber blend supplied in 50-gram balls. The pattern requires five coordinating colorways: Pebble (013) as the main color, ranging from 5 to 9 balls depending on size; Cloud (014) for contrast; Bliss (019); Sugar (017); and Linen (015) for the colorwork design. Knitting is worked on 5.5mm (US 9) needles for the main body, with 5mm (US 8) needles used for the ribbed neckband. Additional notions include stitch holders for managing stitches during construction and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points. The tension is set at 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 centimeters, measured over colorwork stockinette stitch using the 5.5mm needles.
