Cutler Wrap in Rowan Brushed Fleece

What is Being Made

The Cutler Wrap is a generously sized knitted shawl and wrap designed by Martin Storey for Rowan. This intermediate-level project creates a luxuriously long rectangular wrap measuring approximately 230cm (90½ inches) in length and 49cm (19¼ inches) in width, making it an ideal accessory for layering and warmth.

Yarn and Materials

This wrap is crafted using Rowan Brushed Fleece, a soft and tactile yarn that provides comfort and drape. The pattern calls for two colorways of this yarn:

  • Color A: Ness 282 – 3 x 50gm balls
  • Color B: Cairn 263 – 3 x 50gm balls

Knitting needles required are 6mm (US 10), supplied as one pair.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Cutler Wrap employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The primary stitch used is stockinette stitch (stocking stitch), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern on the right side and horizontal bumps on the wrong side.

The wrap features a two-color stripe pattern that repeats every four rows, alternating between the two Brushed Fleece colorways. This striping technique adds visual interest while remaining straightforward to execute. The pattern incorporates yarn stranding, where the yarn not currently in use is carried loosely along the right-hand edge of the work, eliminating the need to cut and rejoin yarn between color changes.

Shaping is achieved through subtle increases and decreases worked at the edges. Specifically, the pattern uses purl into front and back (an increase method) at the beginning of wrong-side rows and purl two together (a decrease technique) at the end of the same rows. This creates gentle shaping that gives the wrap its finished dimensions.

Construction and Finishing

The wrap is constructed as a single piece, beginning with casting on 64 stitches using the 6mm needles and Color A. The four-row stripe pattern is then repeated continuously until the work reaches the full 230cm length, ending after completing a row worked in Color A. All stitches are then cast off to secure the final edge.

The finished piece requires pressing as part of the making-up process, which helps set the stitches and enhance the drape of the Brushed Fleece yarn.

Tension and Sizing

The pattern specifies a tension of 13 stitches and 19 rows to 10cm (4 inches) measured over stockinette stitch using 6mm needles. Achieving the correct tension is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions and ensuring proper fabric characteristics. Knitters are advised to knit a tension swatch before beginning the project to verify their gauge matches the pattern requirements.
