Debbie Bliss Avery Stole

What Is Being Made

The Debbie Bliss Avery Stole is an advanced-level knitted wrap designed as a sophisticated accessory for layering and warmth. This project creates a substantial stole—a larger wrap garment that drapes elegantly across the shoulders. The stole is constructed using a combination of techniques that result in a finished piece with refined shaping and decorative detailing suitable for experienced knitters.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs multiple advanced knitting techniques to achieve its finished design:

  • Lace work: The stole incorporates lace patterning, which requires careful attention to yarn overs and decreases to create openwork sections. Lace techniques add visual interest and a delicate quality to the wrap.
  • Worked flat: The garment is constructed flat on needles rather than in the round, allowing for straightforward shaping and pattern management across rows.
  • Seaming: Seamed construction is used to join sections of the stole together, creating a cohesive finished garment. This technique requires precision to ensure neat, invisible seams.
  • Chart-based construction: The pattern utilizes a border chart that guides the knitter through the lace and shaping sequences, requiring the ability to read and follow knitting charts accurately.

Stitches Used

The Avery Stole employs a range of fundamental and decorative stitches common to advanced lace knitting:

  • Knit and purl stitches: The foundation of the fabric, used to create stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) sections that provide structure and contrast to lace areas.
  • Yarn overs: Created using yarn forward (yf), yarn over needle (yon), and yarn round needle (yrn) techniques, these stitches create the openwork characteristic of lace patterns.
  • Decreases: Including slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (skpo) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) methods, used to balance yarn overs and shape the stole.
  • Make one increases: Used to add stitches within rows for shaping purposes, creating invisible increases that maintain pattern continuity.
  • Knit into front and back (kfb): An alternative increase method that creates a visible decorative element when used intentionally within patterns.

Materials and Tools

The Avery Stole requires specific tools and materials for successful completion:

  • Needles: The pattern calls for 5.50mm (US 9) knitting needles. A medium-length circular needle is used for the main body of the stole, held with yarn worked double (meaning two strands of yarn are held together as one). Straight needles or shorter circular needles are used for the initial border cast-on of 10 stitches.
  • Yarn: The pattern specifies particular yarn requirements; the quantities provided are approximate and based on average requirements. The pattern emphasizes that only the specified yarn should be used to ensure the finished product meets design specifications. Knitters must check the ball band for washing and pressing instructions specific to their chosen yarn.

Essential Pattern Notes

Before beginning the Avery Stole, knitters should be aware of several important requirements:

  • Tension is critical: Working to the stated tension (gauge) is essential for the stole to finish at the correct dimensions. Knitters must always knit a tension square before starting the project. If the tension square produces too many stitches per 10cm/4in, the tension is too tight and a larger needle size should be used. If there are too few stitches, the tension is loose and a smaller needle should be used.
  • Pattern instructions: The first size instructions are given in the main text, with larger sizes provided in round brackets. Where only one figure or instruction appears, it applies to all sizes. Directions within square brackets should be worked the number of times specified in the pattern.
  • Construction method: The stole body is worked from a border chart, with the last stitch of every wrong-side row worked together with one stitch from the circular needle. This technique creates the integrated seaming as the stole is constructed.

The Avery Stole represents an excellent project for advanced knitters seeking to develop their skills in lace work, chart reading, and precision finishing techniques. The combination of lace patterning, flat construction, and seaming creates a sophisticated and wear

First time I knitted this was 15 years ago for my mother’s 80th Birthday when I was an adv beginner knitter. She is 95 now and giving it to my daughter to use for her sister’s fall wedding. I am knitting 3 more for the bridesmaids without the added edging. Just straight rectangular leaf stole, mainly bc of time, in a complimentary color. The pattern will look nice with the Jane Austin inspired one with a leaf edging for the bride. I didn’t have to block it using Kid-Silk lace yarn. Also a plus.
