Debbie Bliss Belmont Stranded Knit Sweater

What is Being Made

The Belmont is an advanced-level pullover sweater designed by Debbie Bliss, available in five finished bust sizes ranging from 94cm (37 inches) to 136cm (53 inches). This garment features a sophisticated stranded colorwork design worked primarily in stocking stitch, with a coordinating two-color ribbed pattern at the cuff and hem. The sweater is knitted flat and seamed, with a sleeve length of 45cm (17¾ inches) and body length to shoulder ranging from 54cm to 63cm depending on size.

Techniques Used

The Belmont employs bottom-up construction, meaning the sweater is worked from the lower edge upward. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, requiring seaming to join the pieces together once knitting is complete. The most prominent technique featured is stranded colorwork, a method where two colors are carried across the row to create pattern repeats. This advanced technique requires careful tension management to ensure the floats (strands of yarn carried across the back) remain even and the fabric maintains consistent elasticity.

The pattern incorporates a two-color ribbed pattern at the beginning, which uses alternating knit and purl stitches in two contrasting colors to create a decorative, textured edge. After the ribbed section, the knitter transitions to stocking stitch combined with stranded colorwork from provided charts, allowing for complex geometric or pictorial designs to emerge across the body of the sweater.

Stitches Used

The primary stitches in the Belmont are:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the smooth, V-textured surface of stocking stitch
  • Purl stitch (p) – used in the ribbed sections and to create texture contrast
  • Stocking stitch (st st) – the main fabric structure, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, professional finish
  • Skpo (slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over) – a left-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • Stranded colorwork stitches – standard knit and purl stitches worked in multiple colors following chart patterns, with unused colors carried as floats along the back of the work

Materials and Gauge

The Belmont is worked in Debbie Bliss Rialto DK, a double-knit weight yarn. The color palette includes Stone 06 as the primary background color (requiring 3 to 5 balls of 50g depending on size), with accent colors in Ocean 72, Mint 54, Deep Rose 50, Camel 67, Sea Green 81, Apple 09, Mustard 99, and Berry 84. Each accent color requires one to two 50g balls.

The pattern calls for two pairs of knitting needles: 3.75mm (US 5) and 4mm (US 6). The smaller needles are used for the ribbed cuff and hem sections to create a tighter, more elastic edge, while the larger needles accommodate the main stocking stitch and stranded colorwork sections. The recommended gauge is 23 stitches and 30 rows to a 10cm (4-inch) square over pattern using 4mm (US 6) needles, making accurate gauge swatching essential for this advanced project to ensure proper fit across all five size options.

Pattern Notes

The pattern includes two detailed charts for colorwork sections. Chart 1 is read bidirectionally: all rows are read from right to left starting from the center of the garment, then from left to right. Chart 2 uses a different reading method, with right-side rows read from right to left and wrong-side rows read from left to right. The pattern features a 10-stitch repeat in the colorwork sections, allowing for consistent patterning across the garment width. Knitters should pay careful attention to chart orientation and color placement to achieve the intended design effect.
