It blends cotton and viscose into the yarn, creating a silky soft fabric with a crisp stitch definition. This sweater form-fitted twisted rib jacket features set-in fluted three-quarter sleeves, almost-there peplum that is sure to flow and flatter, and lots of tiny buttons added to the center front. Debbie Bliss Blaise Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Debbie Bliss Blaise is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed to fit bust sizes 81, 86, 92, and 98 centimeters (32, 34, 36, and 38½ inches). The finished garment features a length of 54 to 57 centimeters (21¼ to 22½ inches) with consistent sleeve length of 29 centimeters (11½ inches) across all sizes. This cardigan is constructed as a button-front closure style, requiring 14 to 15 buttons depending on the size selected.

Techniques Used

The Blaise cardigan employs several key construction techniques that define its structure and fit. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for traditional row-by-row construction. The pieces are seamed together after individual components are completed, creating clean finished seams. The cardigan is constructed using the bottom-up method, meaning knitting begins at the lower edge and progresses upward toward the neckline and armholes. This approach allows for easy length adjustments and straightforward shaping of armholes and neck openings as the work progresses.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern throughout the Blaise cardigan is twisted rib, which creates vertical lines of texture and elasticity. The pattern instructions note that rib stitch patterns extend considerably during wear, meaning the garment will fit closely to the body when not stretched but can accommodate sizes up to three sizes larger than the initial measurements when the rib is extended. This characteristic makes the twisted rib particularly functional for a fitted cardigan silhouette. Shaping is accomplished through standard decreasing techniques including ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) decreases, which are worked strategically at armhole and neckline edges to create proper garment shaping. The pattern also incorporates p2tog (purl two together) decreases on wrong-side rows for seamless shaping integration.

Materials and Gauge

The Blaise cardigan is knitted using Debbie Bliss Piper yarn in Cloud 02, with yardage requirements of 6, 7, 7, and 8 balls of 100-gram weight depending on size selection. Two needle sizes are required: 3.25mm (US 3) needles for ribbed edgings and 3.75mm (US 5) needles for the main body fabric. Both straight needles and circular needles of medium length are specified in the pattern. The working gauge is 28 stitches and 32 rows to 10 centimeters (4 inches) over rib using 3.75mm (US 5) needles, which is essential for achieving proper fit and finished measurements. The pattern requires 14 to 15 buttons for the front closure, with quantities varying by size.
