Bunnies & Bears Collection Ebook - Toys Knitting Patterns for Kids in Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino

What Is Being Made

This downloadable PDF ebook contains a collection of knitted toy patterns designed for children, featuring four distinct seasonal designs: Winter Teddy Bear, Summer Teddy Bear, Spring Bunny Rabbit, and Baby Bunny Rabbit. Each pattern produces a soft, stuffed toy approximately 22cm (8¾ inches) in length, making them ideal for young children and suitable as gifts or keepsakes. The toys are constructed using Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino yarn, a premium fiber choice that provides softness and comfort for toys intended for children.

Techniques Used

The patterns employ several intermediate-level knitting techniques that add visual interest and structural detail to the finished toys:

  • Stranded Colorwork: Multiple color changes throughout the designs allow for detailed patterning and visual distinction between different parts of each toy
  • Stripes: Horizontal striping creates pattern variation, particularly visible in elements such as sailor trousers on the Summer Teddy Bear
  • Seaming: Pieces are sewn together to construct the three-dimensional toy form, requiring assembly after individual components are knitted
  • Button Application: Functional buttons are incorporated as design elements, such as the four white buttons featured on the sailor trousers of the Summer Teddy Bear
  • Worked Flat: All pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round, then assembled through seaming

Stitches Used

The patterns utilize fundamental knitting stitches suitable for intermediate crafters:

  • Stocking Stitch (Stockinette Stitch): The primary stitch throughout, creating a smooth, finished fabric surface that showcases color changes and is ideal for toy construction
  • Knit and Purl: Basic stitches forming the foundation of all pattern rows
  • Increase Stitches: Techniques such as knit into front and back (kfb) and make one (m1) stitches are used to shape toy components, particularly visible in head and ear construction where increases create rounded forms
  • Decrease Stitches: Slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (skpo) decreases are employed to shape and close sections
  • Yarn Over: Creates decorative elements and texture variation within the designs

Materials and Specifications

The Summer Teddy Bear pattern example specifies the following materials and yarn requirements:

  • Yarn: Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino in 50g (1¾oz) balls, with multiple colors used per toy including Teddy 308, Ecru 101, Air Force 311, White 100, Ruby 700, Acid Yellow 91, and Black 300 for embroidered facial features
  • Needles: One pair of 3.25mm (US 3) knitting needles for all construction
  • Notions: Four white buttons, two safety pins, a small crochet hook, and toy stuffing for padding and shaping
  • Gauge: 25 stitches and 34 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using 3.25mm (US 3) needles

Pattern Difficulty and Suitability

Classified as intermediate level, these patterns are appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-piece construction, color changes, and assembly techniques. The use of worked-flat pieces and straightforward shaping makes the patterns accessible while still offering technical challenges through stranded colorwork and precise seaming requirements. Safety considerations note that small parts and accessories are not suitable for children under 36 months, making these toys most appropriate for older children or as decorative keepsakes.

These directions are confusing - hard to tell when one pattern for one knit toy ends and the next begins. I actually thought there was an error in the pattern and bought another singular one at a different web site and the pattern was written exactly the same but only for one variation.
