Debbie Bliss Checkerboard Cardigan
What Is Being Made
The Debbie Bliss Checkerboard Cardigan is a button-front cardigan designed to fit chest sizes ranging from 81–137 cm (32–54 inches). This intermediate-level knitting project features a distinctive checkerboard colorwork pattern created using the intarsia technique. The cardigan is available in six size options with finished chest measurements from 121 cm to 164 cm (47¾ to 64½ inches), and length measurements from 53 to 63 cm (21 to 24¾ inches), with sleeve lengths of 48 to 52 cm (19 to 20½ inches).
Techniques Used
This cardigan employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished design:
- Intarsia colorwork: The checkerboard pattern is worked using the intarsia method, which involves knitting with multiple colors in a structured, geometric design. This technique creates clean color blocks without the floats associated with stranded colorwork.
- Bottom-up construction: The cardigan is worked from the cast-on edge upward, allowing knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and adjust length as needed.
- Seamed construction: Individual pieces—back, fronts, and sleeves—are knitted flat and then seamed together, providing a professional finish and clear shaping lines.
- Worked flat: All pieces are created on straight needles rather than in the round, simplifying the colorwork and shaping process.
Stitches Used
The Debbie Bliss Checkerboard Cardigan is primarily constructed using stocking stitch (stockinette stitch in US terminology), which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric that showcases the colorwork pattern. The ribbed edgings—including the button bands and cuffs—are worked in single rib (alternating knit and purl stitches), which provides elasticity and a finished appearance. Shaping is achieved through strategic decreases at the neck and armhole edges to create the cardigan's fitted silhouette.
Materials and Specifications
This pattern calls for Debbie Bliss Nell yarn, a 50g/1¾oz ball weight yarn available in five distinct colors for the checkerboard design:
- Aqua 06 (A): 2–4 balls depending on size
- Sunset 11 (B): 2–4 balls depending on size
- Jade 07 (C): 2–4 balls depending on size
- Willow 08 (D): 2–3 balls depending on size
- Rose 09 (E): 2–4 balls depending on size
The project requires two pairs of knitting needles: 5mm (US 8) needles for the ribbed edgings and a 5mm (US 8) circular needle for neckline finishing, plus 6mm (US 10) needles for the main body fabric. The tension is 14 stitches and 20 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over the pattern using 6mm (US 10) needles. Three large buttons are required to complete the cardigan front closure.
