Debbie Bliss Cropped Cable Sweater
What is Being Made
The Debbie Bliss Cropped Cable Sweater is a knitted pullover garment designed with a cropped length and decorative cable detailing. This sweater is available in seven size options, ranging from chest measurements of 76–81 cm (30–32 inches) through to 137–142 cm (54–56 inches), with finished chest measurements from 84 cm (33 inches) to 151 cm (59½ inches). The cropped silhouette features a finished length ranging from 52 cm (20½ inches) in the smallest size to 61 cm (24 inches) in the largest size, with consistent sleeve length of 45 cm (17¾ inches) across all sizes.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key construction techniques. The sweater is worked flat, meaning the pieces are knitted in flat rows rather than in the round, allowing for greater control over shaping and cable placement. The garment is then seamed together, with individual pieces joined using mattress stitch or similar seaming methods to create the finished sweater. Cable work forms the primary decorative element, requiring the use of a cable needle to create the twisted rope-like texture characteristic of cable knit designs.
Shaping techniques include strategic decreasing at armholes using methods such as skpo (slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch) and k2tog (knit 2 together) to create a fitted sleeve cap. The pattern also incorporates increases during the body section to achieve the desired finished measurements. The construction begins with a cast-on edge, progresses through the body with cable pattern repeats, and concludes with armhole shaping before binding off.
Stitches Used
The Debbie Bliss Cropped Cable Sweater utilizes a focused selection of fundamental knitting stitches. Stocking stitch (also known as stockinette stitch) forms the primary fabric base, creating the smooth, classic knit appearance that serves as the background for cable details. This stitch is achieved through alternating knit and purl rows when working flat.
Cable stitches provide the sweater's signature textured detail. The pattern employs two primary cable techniques:
- C8B (Cable 8 Back): Slip the next 4 stitches onto a cable needle and hold at the back, knit 4 stitches from the main needle, then knit 4 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable that twists toward the back of the work.
- C8F (Cable 8 Front): Slip the next 4 stitches onto a cable needle and hold at the front, knit 4 stitches from the main needle, then knit 4 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable that twists toward the front of the work.
Additional stitches employed include make 1 (m1) for increases, decrease (dec) for shaping, and garter stitch (g-st) for potential ribbing or textured sections. The pattern uses standard abbreviations including knit (k), purl (p), and pass slipped stitch techniques for decreasing.
Materials and Gauge
The Debbie Bliss Cropped Cable Sweater is designed to be worked in Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran, a premium yarn blend combining cashmere, merino wool, and microfiber for softness and durability. The yarn is supplied in 50-gram (1¾ ounce) balls. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 9 balls in the smallest size to 17 balls in the largest size, all in the colorway Sky.
The pattern requires multiple needle sizes to accommodate different sections. A pair of 4mm (US 6) knitting needles is used for ribbed sections and initial cast-on work. A pair of 5mm (US 8) knitting needles is used for the main body and cable pattern work. Additionally, the pattern calls for a 4mm (US 6) circular needle, a 5mm (US 8) circular needle, and a short 4mm (US 6) circular needle for various construction stages. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitches that define this sweater's aesthetic.
The working tension is 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) square over stocking stitch on
