Debbie Bliss Diamond Patterned Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Debbie Bliss Diamond Patterned Sweater is a classic knitted pullover sweater featuring a decorative diamond pattern throughout. This intermediate-level project is worked flat on knitting needles and seamed together, creating a finished garment with a polished, professional appearance. The sweater is designed to fit chest sizes ranging from 76–81 cm (30–32 inches) up to 137–142 cm (54–56 inches), with corresponding length measurements from 60 cm to 88 cm, making it suitable for multiple sizes and fit preferences.

Techniques Used

This sweater employs several key knitting techniques that define its intermediate difficulty level:

  • Cable Work: The pattern incorporates cable stitches, specifically C6B (cable 6 back) and C6F (cable 6 front) techniques. These involve slipping stitches onto a cable needle, holding them at the back or front of the work, and then knitting across to create the characteristic twisted, rope-like texture of cables.
  • Flat Construction: The sweater is worked flat in rows rather than in the round, meaning each piece is created by working back and forth on straight needles or a long circular needle used in a flat manner.
  • Seaming: After all pieces are completed, they are sewn together using a seaming technique to create the finished garment, requiring careful finishing work.
  • Stitch Manipulation: The pattern includes techniques such as make one (m1) increases, decreases, and twisted stitches (Tw2L and Tw2R), which add texture and shaping throughout the design.

Stitches Used

The Debbie Bliss Diamond Patterned Sweater utilizes a range of fundamental and decorative stitches:

  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch (rev st st): Used as the base fabric, creating a smooth, classic knit surface. The tension is worked at 18 stitches and 24 rows per 10 cm square using 5mm needles.
  • Stockinette Stitch (st st): The standard knit-purl combination that forms the foundation of most knitted garments.
  • Cable Stitches: C6B and C6F stitches create the dimensional diamond pattern that gives the sweater its distinctive visual interest and textural depth.
  • Twisted Stitches: Tw2L (twist 2 left) and Tw2R (twist 2 right) stitches add additional texture and detail to the overall pattern.
  • Increases and Decreases: The pattern uses standard increase methods (make one) and decrease methods (skpo—slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over) to shape the garment at key points such as armholes and neckline.

Materials

Yarn: The sweater is knitted using Debbie Bliss British Wool Aran yarn in the Cream 01 colorway. Yarn requirements are approximate and based on average needs, ranging from 17 balls (50g/1¾oz each) for the smallest size up to 32 balls for the largest size, providing flexibility depending on the finished chest measurement desired.

Needles and Notions: The pattern calls for two pairs of long knitting needles or 80 cm circular needles—one pair in 4.5mm (US 7) size for ribbing and one pair in 5mm (US 8) size for the main fabric. Additionally, a cable needle is required for working the cable stitches, and 4 stitch holders are needed to hold stitches during construction, particularly at the neckline and other shaping points.

Pattern Overview

This intermediate knitting project combines classic cable techniques with a diamond pattern motif to create a sophisticated, wearable sweater. The use of British Wool Aran yarn provides warmth and durability, while the seamed flat construction allows for precise shaping and a professional finish. The cable and twisted stitch details add visual complexity and texture that elevates the sweater beyond a basic stockinette design, making it an engaging project for knitters with some experience in cable work and garment assembly.
