Debbie Bliss Falkirk Sweater

What is Being Made

The Falkirk Sweater is a sophisticated knitted pullover designed by Debbie Bliss, available in five size options to fit bust measurements from 81-86 cm (32-34 inches) through 122-127 cm (48-50 inches). The finished garment features bust measurements ranging from 109 cm (43 inches) to 137 cm (54 inches), with a length to side neck of 56-64 cm (22-25¼ inches) and consistent sleeve length of 46 cm (18 inches) across all sizes. This is an advanced-level knitting project suitable for experienced knitters seeking a complex, textured design.

Techniques Used

The Falkirk Sweater employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that create visual interest and depth throughout the garment:

  • Cable work: The sweater features multiple cable stitches including C4B (cable 4 back), C4F (cable 4 front), C5B (cable 5 back), and C5F (cable 5 front). These cables are worked by slipping stitches onto a cable needle, holding them to the front or back of the work, then knitting stitches in a specific sequence to create twisted, rope-like textures.
  • Cable panels: Dedicated 26-stitch cable panels are repeated three times across the body, creating structured vertical design elements that run the length of the sweater.
  • Bottom-up construction: The sweater is worked from the bottom edge upward, beginning with ribbed edging that is increased to accommodate the main pattern.
  • Flat knitting: The body and sleeves are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, requiring seaming to join pieces together.
  • Seaming: After completing individual pieces (front, back, and sleeves), they are sewn together using a seaming technique appropriate for the yarn weight and stitch pattern.

Stitches Used

The Falkirk Sweater combines fundamental and decorative stitches to achieve its finished appearance:

  • Knit and purl stitches: These basic stitches form the foundation of the pattern, creating the stockinette stitch background against which cables stand out.
  • Ribbing: A 2x2 rib (alternating 2 knit stitches with 2 purl stitches) is worked at the lower edge for 11 full repeats plus one additional row, creating an elastic, fitted edge. This ribbing is repeated 10 times plus one additional row to establish the base structure.
  • Cable stitches: C4B, C4F, C5B, and C5F stitches create the signature textured elements. These cables twist over each other as they progress up the sweater, with the cable needle technique allowing stitches to be held while others are worked, then worked in reverse order to create the twisted effect.
  • Increases: Make one (m1) increases are worked during the transition from ribbing to main pattern, strategically placed to accommodate the cable pattern repeat and achieve the desired finished measurements.

Materials

The Falkirk Sweater requires specific materials to achieve the intended drape, texture, and finished dimensions:

  • Yarn: 14-20 balls of Debbie Bliss Rialto DK in Stone 06, depending on size selected. Each ball weighs 50 grams. Rialto DK is a double-knitting weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for cable work while maintaining good drape for a wearable garment.
  • Needles: A pair each of 3.25mm (US 3) and 4mm (US 6) straight knitting needles. The smaller needles are used for the ribbed edging to create a firm, elastic cuff, while the larger needles accommodate the main pattern and cable stitches.
  • Additional tools: A 3.25mm (US 3) circular needle measuring 60 cm (24 inches) long is included for certain sections, a cable needle for managing cable stitches, and a stitch holder for securing stitches during construction.
  • Gauge: The pattern specifies 30 stitches and 32 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) square when measured over pattern using 4mm (US 6) needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit and finished measurements.
