Debbie Bliss Hattie Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Hattie Cardigan is a classic knitted cardigan sweater designed by Debbie Bliss. This garment is constructed as a single piece from the bottom up, with the back and fronts worked together before being separated for individual shaping. The cardigan features a button-front closure and is available in five sizes to fit bust measurements ranging from 81-86 cm (32-34 inches) up to 122-127 cm (48-50 inches), with finished bust measurements between 115 cm (45¼ inches) and 158 cm (62 inches).

Techniques Used

The Hattie Cardigan employs several key knitting techniques that make it suitable for beginner-level knitters:

  • Bottom-up construction: The cardigan is worked from the lower edge upward, allowing knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and adjust length as needed.
  • Flat knitting: The piece is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, making it more accessible for those new to circular needle techniques.
  • Seamed assembly: The completed pieces are seamed together, which provides structure and a professional finish to the garment.
  • Wrap and turn shaping: The pattern uses wrap and turn techniques to create smooth shoulder shaping without visible holes. This involves slipping stitches, wrapping yarn around them, and working the wrapped stitch and wrapping loop together on subsequent rows to create gradual shoulder slope.

Stitches Used

The Hattie Cardigan is primarily worked in moss stitch, a fundamental textured stitch pattern that alternates knit and purl stitches to create a bumpy, fabric-like appearance. Moss stitch is an excellent choice for beginner knitters as it uses only basic knit and purl stitches while producing a visually interesting and reversible fabric. The pattern also incorporates standard abbreviations including knit (k), purl (p), and pattern (patt) repeats throughout the construction.

Materials

The Hattie Cardigan is designed to be knitted using Debbie Bliss Merion yarn in the colorway Sky 09. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 8 balls (100g each) for the smallest size to 14 balls for the largest size, providing flexibility for different gauges and personal preferences.

Three different needle sizes are required for this project:

  • Pair of 6mm (US 10) knitting needles for ribbed edgings and cuffs
  • Pair of 8mm (US 11) knitting needles for the main body of the cardigan
  • Long circular 7mm (US 10.5) knitting needle for neckline and front band work

The pattern specifies a gauge of 11 stitches and 19 rows to a 10 cm (4 inch) square when working moss stitch using the 8mm (US 11) needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements and ensuring the cardigan fits as intended.
