Holkham Sweater by Debbie Bliss

What is Being Made

The Holkham is an advanced-level knitted sweater designed by Debbie Bliss, available in four sizes to fit bust measurements of 81-86cm (32-34in), 92-97cm (36-38in), 102-107cm (40-42in), and 112-117cm (44-46in). The finished garment features bust measurements of 90cm (35½in), 101cm (39¾in), 112cm (44in), and 125cm (49¼in) respectively, with a consistent sleeve length of 45cm (17¾in) across all sizes and shoulder lengths ranging from 55-58cm (21¾-22¾in) depending on size.

Techniques Used

This sweater is constructed using a bottom-up approach, meaning the garment is knitted starting from the lower edges and working upward toward the shoulders. The pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, and are subsequently seamed together to create the finished garment. The design incorporates cable techniques as a central design element, creating textured panels throughout the piece.

Stitches Used

The Holkham employs several key stitch techniques:

  • Ribbing: The garment begins with knit-purl ribbing (alternating k1, p1) that establishes the foundation and provides elasticity at the edges.
  • Stocking stitch: The primary fabric throughout the body and sleeves, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, classic knitted appearance.
  • Cable stitches: Two primary cable crosses are used—C7B (cable 7 back: slip 4 stitches to cable needle, hold to back, knit 3, then knit 4 from cable needle) and C7F (cable 7 front: slip 3 stitches to cable needle, hold to front, knit 4, then knit 3 from cable needle). These cables are worked across 18-stitch panels that measure 6cm (2¼in) in width and are repeated at regular intervals throughout the sweater body.
  • Decreasing: Strategic decreases are incorporated during the ribbed sections to shape the garment and transition to the main body.

Materials

The Holkham is knitted using Debbie Bliss Rialto DK yarn in the colorway Bark 87. The yardage requirement ranges from 10 to 13 balls of 50-gram weight depending on the chosen size. Knitting needles required include a pair of 3.25mm (US 3) needles for the ribbed sections and a pair of 4mm (US 6) needles for the main body and sleeves. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable crosses throughout the design. The gauge is 22 stitches and 30 rows per 10cm (4in) square worked in stocking stitch using the 4mm needles, ensuring proper fit and drape of the finished sweater.
