Debbie Bliss Ivo Jacket

What is Being Made

The Ivo Jacket is an advanced-level knitted coat designed to fit chest measurements ranging from 81–86 cm (32–34 inches) up to 142–147 cm (56–58 inches). The finished garment features a chest width of 120–180 cm (47¼–71 inches) and a length to shoulder of 55–66 cm (21¾–26 inches), making it a substantial layering piece suitable for various sizes and body types.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that contribute to its advanced difficulty rating. The jacket is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, requiring careful attention to shaping and finishing. Seaming is used to join the various pieces together, creating clean, professional seams. The design incorporates cable work, which adds textural interest and visual depth to the finished garment. Buttonholes are strategically placed throughout the design, and the jacket is finished with buttons as functional closures, requiring precision in placement and execution.

Stitches Used

The Ivo Jacket utilizes several key stitch patterns to create its distinctive appearance. Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) forms the foundation of much of the garment, providing a smooth, classic knitted surface. Cable stitches are featured prominently, with specific cable techniques including C4B (cable 4 back), C4F (cable 4 front), C4Bdec (cable 4 back with decrease), and C4Fdec (cable 4 front with decrease). These cable variations create both textural and shaping elements. A honeycomb pattern is also incorporated into the design, adding visual interest and dimensional texture. Wrapping techniques are employed for shaping purposes, allowing the knitter to create smooth transitions and refined garment shaping.

Materials and Gauge

The Ivo Jacket is designed to be knitted using Debbie Bliss Saphia yarn in the colorway Heather 01. Yarn quantities range from 9 hanks (100g/3½oz each) for the smallest size up to 14 hanks for the largest size, providing flexibility for different garment dimensions. The pattern requires two sets of needles: 7mm (US 10½) knitting needles for ribbed sections and 8mm (US 11) knitting needles for the main fabric. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable work throughout the design. The gauge over stocking stitch is 12 stitches and 17 rows to 10cm (4 inches) using 8mm needles, while the honeycomb pattern gauge is 16 stitches and 18 rows to 10cm using the same needle size. Nine buttons are required to complete the jacket closure.
