Debbie Bliss Katye Knitted Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Katye is a knitted sweater designed by Debbie Bliss, available in five sizes to fit bust measurements from 86cm to 107cm (34 to 42 inches). The finished garment features a bust measurement ranging from 91cm to 113cm (35¾ to 44½ inches) with a center back neck length between 50cm and 57cm (19¾ to 22½ inches). Sleeves are consistently 30cm (12 inches) when the lower edge is unrolled across all sizes, making this a versatile everyday sweater suitable for intermediate knitters.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Katye sweater employs multiple construction techniques to create a well-fitted garment. The sweater is worked flat on straight needles for the main body pieces, then worked in the round using circular needles for seamless sections. The garment is constructed bottom-up, beginning from the lower edges and working toward the shoulders and neckline. Seaming is used to join the flat-worked pieces together, while lace stitch patterns add decorative texture and visual interest throughout the design. This combination of techniques creates both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches as the foundation. Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) forms the primary fabric base, creating a smooth, classic knit surface. Lace elements are incorporated through techniques such as yarn forward (yf) and yarn over (yo) increases, combined with strategic decreases like skpo (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over) and k2tog (knit two together) to create openwork patterns. The pattern also includes a make bobble (MB) stitch, which involves creating a decorative bobble by working multiple stitches into a single stitch, turning, and then passing stitches over one another. Shaping techniques include wrap stitches for smooth transitions and make one (m1) increases worked into the back loop of the stitch between two worked stitches.

Materials and Gauge

The Katye sweater requires 5 to 7 balls of Debbie Bliss Piper yarn in Sky 05, depending on the size being knitted, with each ball weighing 100g. The pattern calls for two types of needles: 3.75mm (US 5) circular needles measuring 80cm and 60cm in length for certain sections, and a pair of 4mm (US 6) straight knitting needles for the main fabric construction. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using 4mm (US 6) needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. Accurate gauge is particularly important for this intermediate-level sweater to ensure proper fit across the bust and length.
