Debbie Bliss Man's Classic Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Debbie Bliss Man's Classic Cardigan is a timeless knitted cardigan designed for men, available in four sizes to fit chest measurements of 92-97cm (36-38in), 102-107cm (40-42in), 112-117cm (44-46in), and 122-127cm (48-50in). This garment features a sophisticated, traditional construction with finished chest measurements ranging from 101cm to 138cm (39¾in to 54¼in). The cardigan is worked to a finished length to shoulder of 60-69cm (23½-27in) with consistent sleeve length of 48cm (19in) across all sizes.

Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level cardigan employs several classic knitting techniques to create a polished, professional finish:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The cardigan is worked from the bottom upward, allowing for straightforward shaping and adjustments as you progress.
  • Worked Flat: All pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round, creating seamed garment sections.
  • Seamed Assembly: Individual pieces (fronts, back, sleeves, and pocket linings) are knitted separately and then seamed together for a structured, tailored appearance.
  • Buttonholes: The pattern incorporates functional buttonholes along the front opening to accommodate the button closure system.
  • Button Bands: Ribbed edgings frame the front opening and neckline, providing both structural support and visual definition.
  • Pocket Linings: Two separate pocket linings are created using stockinette stitch, offering practical functionality within the garment design.
  • Shoulder Shaping: Graduated cast-offs at the shoulder create proper armhole depth and sleeve cap fit, with final stitches worked in rib before binding off.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches executed with precision:

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic fabric with characteristic knit-side appearance.
  • Ribbed Stitch: Used for cuffs, waistband, neckline finishing, and shoulder rib sections. The pattern specifies alternating knit and purl stitches (k1, p1 rib) to create elastic, structured edges.
  • Knit and Purl Combinations: Strategic use of knit (k) and purl (p) stitches in ribbed sections provides stretch and recovery, essential for garment edges.

Materials and Tools

The Debbie Bliss Man's Classic Cardigan requires specific materials to achieve the intended finished garment:

  • Yarn: 13-17 balls of Debbie Bliss Rialto DK (depending on size), each ball weighing 50g. The yarn is specified in Wine 83 colorway for the pattern shown.
  • Needles: Two pairs of needles are required—3.25mm (US 3) needles for ribbed sections and 4mm (US 6) needles for the main stockinette stitch fabric.
  • Notions: Six buttons for the front closure.
  • Tension: The pattern is designed to achieve 22 stitches and 30 rows over a 10cm (4in) square when working stockinette stitch on 4mm (US 6) needles. Achieving proper tension is essential for garment fit across all size ranges.

Pattern Difficulty and Skill Level

Classified as an intermediate project, this cardigan requires competency with fundamental knitting techniques including cast-on methods, basic stitch work, increasing and decreasing for shaping, buttonhole creation, and seaming. The graduated shoulder shaping and multi-piece construction demand attention to pattern instructions and finishing skills, making it suitable for knitters with prior garment-making experience.

5 Stars

I was looking for a simple classic cardigan pattern for my husband. I'm only about half way through, but I really like how it is turning out. The directions are easy enough to follow. I am using a DK weight cotton/merino yarn. The only adjustment I've made is to the bottom ribbing. I used the same size needle as the body of the sweater to give it a straighter profile. So far so good.
