Debbie Bliss Notebook Cover

What is Being Made

This is a knitted notebook cover designed to fit a standard A5 notebook measuring 21 x 16cm (8¼ x 6¼ inches). The cover is worked sideways from the inside back cover, creating a protective fabric wrapper for the notebook with decorative stranded colorwork details.

Techniques Used

The Debbie Bliss Notebook Cover employs stranded knitting as its primary decorative technique, allowing for the incorporation of multiple yarn colors within the same row. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, making it an accessible project for knitters learning colorwork methods. The pattern combines stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) as the main fabric with moss stitch (also known as seed stitch) used strategically for textured edges and border sections that frame the design.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking Stitch (St st): The primary stitch forming the main body of the cover, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side to produce a smooth, flat fabric
  • Moss Stitch: A textured stitch created by alternating knit and purl stitches within each row and reversing the pattern on subsequent rows, used for decorative edges and border sections
  • Garter Stitch: Knit stitches worked on both right-side and wrong-side rows to create ridged texture, used in specific sections of the pattern
  • Stranded Colorwork: Multiple yarn colors are carried across the back of the work within rows, allowing the creation of a charted design incorporating the three yarn colors

Materials

The notebook cover is constructed using Debbie Bliss Rialto 4-Ply yarn, a fine-weight yarn suitable for detailed colorwork. The color palette consists of one 50-gram ball of Black 03 (color A), Red 09 (color B), and small amounts of Ecru 02 (color C) for the stranded design. The project is worked on 3.25mm (US 3) knitting needles, which are appropriately sized for the 4-ply yarn weight and produce the correct gauge of 28 stitches and 36 rows to a 10cm (4-inch) square in stocking stitch.

Pattern Structure

The pattern begins by casting on 57 stitches and establishing moss stitch borders. The cover is constructed in distinct sections: initial moss stitch edging, followed by extended passages of stocking stitch with stranded colorwork from a 25-row chart, interspersed with moss stitch sections for texture and visual interest. The sideways construction method means the cover is knitted lengthwise to wrap around the notebook, creating a seamless, professional finish.

Difficulty Level

This is classified as a beginner level project, making it an excellent introduction to stranded colorwork techniques. While the pattern incorporates multiple colors and a charted design, the straightforward stitch combinations and worked-flat construction keep it accessible for knitters new to colorwork methods.
