Debbie Bliss Robyn Top
What is Being Made
The Robyn Top is a short-sleeved knitted sweater designed as an intermediate-level knitting project. This garment features a classic pullover construction with a striped colorway created using two contrasting colors from the Debbie Bliss Piper yarn range. The top is available in six size options, ranging from bust measurements of 82cm (32 inches) to 107cm (42 inches), with finished bust measurements between 86cm and 114cm. The sleeve length is a consistent 14cm (5½ inches) across all sizes, and the length to shoulder ranges from 48cm to 53cm (19 to 21 inches), making this a versatile piece suitable for various body types and proportions.
Techniques Used
The Robyn Top is constructed using several key knitting techniques that define its structure and visual appeal:
- Bottom-up construction: The garment is worked from the lower edge upward, beginning with cast-on stitches at the hem and progressing toward the shoulder shaping and neckline.
- Worked flat: All pieces are knitted on straight needles in flat rows rather than in the round, creating seams that are finished later.
- Seamed assembly: Individual pieces (front, back, and sleeves) are knitted separately and then sewn together using mattress stitch or similar seaming techniques to create the finished garment.
- Stripe patterning: Horizontal stripes are created by alternating between the main color (Snow 01) and contrast color (Flame 12) at regular intervals throughout the design, adding visual interest and dimension to the finished piece.
- Armhole shaping: The armholes are shaped through strategic cast-offs at the beginning of rows followed by decreases worked as skpo (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over) and k2tog (knit two together) to create a fitted sleeve cap.
- Shoulder shaping: Graduated cast-offs at the shoulders create a properly fitted neckline and shoulder line.
- Neckline shaping: The front neckline is shaped through a combination of cast-offs and decreases to create a comfortable opening.
Stitches Used
The Robyn Top employs a straightforward stitch vocabulary appropriate for an intermediate knitter:
- Stocking stitch (st st): The primary stitch used throughout the garment, creating a smooth, classic fabric with knit stitches on the right side and purl stitches on the wrong side.
- Ribbing (k1, p1): Used for the welts at the hem and cuffs, creating an elastic, fitted edge that helps the garment retain its shape.
- Decreases: Skpo (slip one stitch, knit one stitch, pass the slipped stitch over) and k2tog (knit two stitches together) are used for armhole and shoulder shaping, creating neat, directional decreases.
- Make one (m1): Used for increases where shaping requires adding stitches.
- Yarn over needle (yon): Creates decorative eyelets or increases as needed in the design.
- Cast-offs: Used to secure stitches at armholes, shoulders, and the neckline.
Materials
The Robyn Top is designed to be knitted using Debbie Bliss Piper yarn, a 100g ball weight yarn. The pattern requires 4 to 6 balls of Debbie Bliss Piper in Snow 01 (the main color) depending on the size being knitted, plus one ball of Debbie Bliss Piper in Flame 12 (the contrast color for stripes). The project is worked on 3.25mm (US 3) knitting needles for the ribbed welts and 4mm (US 6) knitting needles for the main body, allowing for a gauge change that creates definition between the fitted edges and the body of the sweater. The pattern also calls for three buttons for finishing details. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 30 rows to a 10cm (4-inch) square when worked in stocking stitch using the 4mm needles, ensuring proper fit and drape of the finished garment.
