Product Description
S. Y. R. Sweater from Debbie Bliss has a classic crewneck pullover silhouette with the addition of cleverly designed stripes that run from one wrist up across the shoulders and down to the other wrist. Knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and seamed, the sleeves are worked in simple intarsia to create the seamless continuation of the stripes as they meet the body. Choose a high contrast palette like the model or a more subdued gradient look—the possibilities are nearly endless with Rialto DK! This soft and warm Merino wool yarn is machine-washable and has excellent stitch definition, making it a great go-to for sweaters. Add modern striping to a timeless sweater and have a great wardrobe staple ready for fall and winter! The intarsia pattern is in written form only.

Debbie Bliss S.Y.R. Jumper: Knitted Sweater Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Debbie Bliss S.Y.R. Jumper is a knitted sweater designed to fit chest sizes ranging from 91cm to 122cm (36 to 48 inches). This intermediate-level garment features finished chest measurements from 105cm to 136cm (41¼ to 53½ inches) with a length to shoulder of 66cm to 72cm (26 to 28¼ inches) and consistent sleeve length of 50cm (19¾ inches) across all sizes. The sweater is part of the S.Y.R. collection by Debbie Bliss, created in 2019.
Techniques Used
This sweater is constructed using several key knitting techniques that create visual interest and structure:
- Bottom-up construction: The garment is worked from the cast-on edge upward, allowing for easier fitting adjustments and a traditional building method.
- Worked flat: The pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round, requiring seaming to join the finished components.
- Seamed construction: Individual pieces (back, front, and sleeves) are knitted separately and then sewn together to create the finished garment.
- Intarsia: This color-work technique allows for the incorporation of distinct colored sections within the knitted fabric, creating pattern blocks or design elements.
- Striping: Horizontal stripes are created by changing yarn colors at specific row intervals throughout the garment, adding visual dimension and design detail.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout this sweater is stocking stitch (abbreviated as st st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side. Stocking stitch is achieved by alternating knit rows and purl rows when working flat. The pattern also incorporates standard shaping techniques including make one increases (m1), decreases (dec), and cast-off (bind-off) methods to shape armholes and shoulders.
Materials and Gauge
The Debbie Bliss S.Y.R. Jumper is knitted using Debbie Bliss Rialto DK yarn in three coordinating colors:
- White 01 (Main color): 8 to 11 fifty-gram balls depending on size
- Scarlet 12 (Accent color): 1 to 2 fifty-gram balls depending on size
- Black 03 (Accent color): 3 to 5 fifty-gram balls depending on size
Two pairs of knitting needles are required: 3.25mm (US size 3) needles for the ribbed cuffs and waistband, and 4mm (US size 6) needles for the main body and sleeves. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 30 rows measured over a 10cm (4-inch) square of stocking stitch using the 4mm (US size 6) needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements.
Pattern Structure and Shaping
The sweater features structured shaping at key points. Armholes are created by casting off 7 stitches at the beginning of two consecutive rows, followed by 30 rows of stocking stitch before the color work begins. The pattern includes strategic color changes: after the initial stocking stitch section, scarlet yarn is introduced for 8 rows, followed by a return to white for 4 rows. Shoulder shaping is accomplished through graduated cast-offs at the beginning of rows, with the back neck stitches left on a spare needle for later finishing. The front follows the same construction as the back through the armhole shaping stage, with additional pattern details continuing to the shoulder.
