Product Description

Debbie Bliss Skye is a stunning traditional women’s Fair Isle vest with a lovely modern twist knit in Baby Cashmerino. This is a great project for knitters new to Fair Isle since there are no sleeves to deal with. The vest is knit flat from the bottom up and then seamed. Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino is perfect for baby and children’s items or anything where you want blissfully soft fabric against the skin. The Fair Isle patterns are in chart form only.

Debbie Bliss Skye Waistcoat

What Is Being Made

The Debbie Bliss Skye is an advanced-level knitted waistcoat designed for babies and children. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a sleeveless vest garment in twelve different size options, ranging from chest measurements of 86cm (34 inches) to 140cm (55¼ inches). The finished length to back neck including hem edging ranges from 45.5cm (17¾ inches) for the smallest size to 54.5cm (21½ inches) for the largest size.

Knitting Techniques

The Skye waistcoat employs several advanced knitting techniques that elevate this project beyond beginner level:

  • Stranded Colorwork: This pattern incorporates stranded knitting, a technique where multiple yarn colors are carried across the back of the work to create intricate color patterns on the fabric surface.
  • Worked Flat: The garment is constructed using flat knitting on straight needles rather than in the round, with pieces knitted separately and then seamed together.
  • Buttonholes: Functional buttonholes are integrated into the pattern, allowing for button closures along the front opening of the waistcoat.
  • Button Bands: The pattern includes instructions for creating finished button bands that frame the front opening and accommodate the five buttons required for closure.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in structured ways. The primary stitch work is stocking stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows), which creates the smooth, classic fabric base. The colorwork sections employ the stranded technique, where stitches are knitted in different colors to build the patterned design. The pattern includes abbreviations for essential stitch techniques including knit (k), purl (p), yarn forward (yf), and through back of loops (tbl), indicating that the construction involves standard knitting vocabulary with some refinement techniques for neat finishing.

Materials and Specifications

This pattern calls for Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino yarn, a luxurious blend suitable for delicate baby garments. The yarn is supplied in 50g/1¾oz balls. The color palette includes six distinct shades:

  • Black 300 (A) – 3 to 7 balls depending on size
  • Lagoon 310 (B) – 1 to 4 balls depending on size
  • Ruby 700 (C) – 1 to 3 balls depending on size
  • Olive 312 (D) – 1 to 3 balls depending on size
  • Mustard 316 (E) – 1 to 3 balls depending on size
  • White 100 (F) – 1 to 2 balls depending on size

The pattern requires two pairs of knitting needles: 3mm (US 2-3) needles for ribbed edgings and 3.75mm (US 5) needles for the main fabric. The tension gauge is 25 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm (4 inches) measured over pattern using the 3.75mm needles. Additionally, five buttons are needed to complete the waistcoat closures. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF format and is exclusively distributed through Lovecrafts, with copyright held by Debbie Bliss Limited as of 2021.

Pattern Structure

The pattern provides comprehensive sizing with twelve graduated options to fit a wide range of children from infancy through early childhood. Each size includes specific yardage requirements for each color, allowing crafters to purchase the exact materials needed. The inclusion of detailed abbreviations and translations suggests this is an internationally accessible pattern, supporting knitters who may use different terminology conventions.
