Debbie Bliss Star Jumper

What is Being Made

The Debbie Bliss Star Jumper is a children's knitted sweater designed to fit ages 1 to 5 years. This classic pullover features a charted star motif worked using stranded colorwork techniques. The jumper is available in four size options with finished chest measurements ranging from 65cm (25½ inches) for the smallest size up to 79cm (31 inches) for the largest size. The length to shoulder varies from 34cm (13½ inches) to 45cm (17¾ inches) depending on the size selected.

Techniques Used

This garment is constructed using a bottom-up seamed method, meaning the back and front pieces are knitted separately from the cast-on edge upward, then assembled together. The jumper features stranded colorwork for the star pattern, a technique where multiple yarn colors are carried across the wrong side of the work to create the design. The pattern also incorporates worked flat construction on straight needles rather than in the round.

Additional shaping techniques include garter stitch panels worked on the sides of the garment for textural interest, and shoulder shaping achieved through strategic cast-offs at the beginning of rows to create proper armhole depth and fit.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch (st st): The primary stitch forming the main body of the sweater, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, flat fabric
  • Garter stitch: Worked in panels on the sides of the garment, created by knitting every row for textural contrast
  • Ribbing (k2, p2): Used for the welts at the lower edge, cuffs, and neckline to create elasticity and a fitted finish
  • Stranded colorwork: Used for the star motif, requiring the knitter to work with multiple yarn colors in a single row, carrying unused colors across the back of the work

Materials

This pattern uses Debbie Bliss Cotton DK yarn, a lightweight double-knitting weight cotton suitable for children's garments. The yarn quantities vary by size, requiring between 6 to 9 balls of French Navy (color M) as the main color, 3 to 4 balls of Jade (color A) for the star pattern, and 1 to 2 balls of White (color B) for additional colorwork detail.

Two sizes of knitting needles are required: 3.25mm (US 3) needles for the ribbed welts and 4mm (US 6) needles for the main body. The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over a 10cm (4-inch) square when working stockinette stitch on the 4mm needles, ensuring proper fit and drape of the finished garment.
