Debbie Bliss Tartan Tea Cosy
What Is Being Made
The Debbie Bliss Tartan Tea Cosy is a knitted tea cosy designed to fit snugly around a standard teapot. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a decorative and functional accessory with finished measurements of approximately 30cm (12 inches) wide and 26cm (10¼ inches) high. The tea cosy features a classic tartan pattern worked in stranded colorwork, combining navy, scarlet, and apple green yarns for a traditional Scottish aesthetic.
Techniques Used
This project employs several key knitting techniques suited to intermediate crafters:
- Stranded colorwork: The tartan pattern is created using the stranded technique, where multiple yarn colors are carried across the wrong side of the work. This method allows the vibrant tartan design to be integrated seamlessly into the fabric.
- Worked flat: The tea cosy pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round, which simplifies the colorwork process and makes pattern reading more straightforward.
- Seaming: Two identical flat pieces are knitted separately and then seamed together along the sides, creating the three-dimensional form of the finished cosy.
- Shaping: The top of the tea cosy is shaped through strategic decreasing (using k2tog and k2tog tbl methods) to create a fitted opening that accommodates the teapot spout and handle.
- Hemming: A foldline row creates a neat hem at the base of the cosy, which is then slipstitched in place for a professional finish.
Stitches Used
The Tartan Tea Cosy is primarily constructed using fundamental knitting stitches:
- Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch): The main fabric throughout the project, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side. This creates the smooth, flat surface ideal for displaying the tartan colorwork pattern.
- Knit and purl stitches: These basic stitches form the foundation of all stocking stitch work and are used in combination to build the fabric.
- Decreases: K2tog (knit two together) and k2tog tbl (knit two together through back loop) are used to shape the top of the cosy, reducing stitch count gradually to create the fitted opening.
- Slipstitch: Used during finishing to attach the hemmed fold at the base of the cosy to the main fabric with invisible stitching.
Materials and Gauge
The Debbie Bliss Tartan Tea Cosy is worked using Debbie Bliss Rialto DK yarn, a double knit weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for colorwork projects. The yarn requirements are:
- 2 balls (50g/1¾oz each) in Navy 17 (Color A)
- 2 balls (50g/1¾oz each) in Scarlet 12 (Color B)
- 1 ball (50g/1¾oz) in Apple 9 (Color C)
The project is worked on 4mm (US 6) knitting needles, which are paired with the DK yarn weight to achieve the correct gauge. The specified tension is 22 stitches and 28 rows to a 10cm (4 inch) square over patterned stocking stitch using 4mm needles. Achieving this gauge is essential for the finished cosy to fit properly around a standard teapot.
In addition to yarn and needles, the project requires cotton fabric for lining and wadding (batting). These materials are cut using a paper template created from the knitted pieces and provide insulation and structure to the finished tea cosy, ensuring it protects hands from heat while maintaining its shape.
Pattern Structure
The Tartan Tea Cosy pattern consists of two identical pieces that are knitted separately and then joined. Each piece begins with a cast-on of 77 stitches and includes a foldline row that creates the hem at the base. The colorwork tartan pattern is worked from a chart in stocking stitch, with shaping occurring at the top through repeated decreases on right-side rows followed by purl rows. The pattern demonstrates how stranded colorwork and structured shaping can be combined to create a practical, decorative finished object.
