Debbie Bliss Uluru Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Debbie Bliss Uluru Sweater is a colorful knitted pullover sweater featuring an intarsia design inspired by the natural landscape. This intermediate-level garment is available in five sizes, ranging from bust measurements of 81–86 cm (32–34 inches) to 122–127 cm (48–50 inches). The finished sweater features a length to shoulder of 61–69 cm (24–27¼ inches) and sleeve length of 45 cm (17¾ inches).

Techniques Used

The Uluru Sweater is constructed using several key knitting techniques that create its distinctive appearance and structure:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The sweater is worked from the bottom upward, allowing for easy adjustments and seamless integration of pattern elements.
  • Intarsia Colorwork: The primary design feature involves intarsia knitting, a technique where different colored yarns are used to create a pictorial pattern directly into the fabric. This method produces a smooth, single-layer fabric with no floats on the reverse side, making it ideal for the detailed landscape design of this sweater.
  • Worked Flat: The pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round, which is then seamed together to complete the garment.
  • Seamed Construction: Individual pieces (back, front, and sleeves) are sewn together using seaming techniques to create the finished sweater.

Stitches Used

The Uluru Sweater employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with textured variations:

  • Stocking Stitch (St St): The primary stitch used throughout most of the sweater body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric.
  • Garter Stitch: Knit on every row, this stitch is incorporated into the design chart for textured areas, adding visual interest and dimension to the intarsia pattern.
  • Moss Stitch: Created by purling on the right side and knitting on the wrong side, this stitch provides additional texture and is used selectively within the patterned sections.
  • Ribbing: A 2×2 rib pattern (alternating knit 2, purl 2) is used at the lower edge of the garment for elasticity and a fitted finish.

Materials and Yarn

The Uluru Sweater is designed to be knitted with Debbie Bliss Paloma yarn, a 50g hank weight. The pattern requires multiple colors to create the intarsia design:

  • Blossom 45 (A): 6(6:7:8:8) hanks—the primary color forming the background of the design
  • Charcoal 03 (D): 3(3:4:4:4) hanks—a neutral dark shade used for contrast and definition
  • Tangerine 36 (B): 2(2:3:3:3) hanks—a warm orange tone contributing to the landscape palette
  • Terracotta 46 (C): 2(2:3:3:3) hanks—an earthy reddish-brown shade
  • Purple 14 (E): 2(2:3:3:3) hanks—an accent color adding depth to the design
  • Fuchsia 33 (F): 1(1:1:2:2) hanks—a vibrant pink used for fine details

Needles and Gauge

The pattern calls for two sizes of knitting needles to achieve proper fabric structure and fit. A pair each of 8mm (US 11) and 9mm (US 13) needles are required. The 8mm needles are used for the ribbed cuff, while the 9mm needles are used for the main body and sleeves. The working gauge is 13 stitches and 16 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using 9mm (US 13) needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for the sweater to fit as designed across all five size options.
