Product Description
Vlada Cable Sweater from Debbie Bliss is a stunning women’s
pullover knit in Cashmerino Aran, a fantastic heavy worsted weight favorite.
This yarn is great for baby and children’s items as it has a tight twist for
wear and is machine washable. The sweater is an excellent introduction to
cabling. Vlada features a crew neckline, dropped shoulders, embroidery over the
cables running down the front and back center, and sleeves. It is knit flat in
pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. The cable patterns are in
written form only.

Debbie Bliss Vlada Cable Sweater
What is Being Made
The Vlada Cable Sweater is a pullover sweater designed to fit chest sizes ranging from 81-86 cm (32-34 inches) up to 142-147 cm (56-58 inches). This intermediate-level knitting project produces a finished garment with chest measurements from 120 cm (47¼ inches) to 185 cm (72¾ inches), depending on the chosen size. The sweater features a sophisticated cable panel design and is worked in a luxurious yarn blend, making it an elegant layering piece or standalone garment.
Techniques Used
This sweater is constructed using the bottom-up method, meaning the body and sleeves are knitted starting from the lower edge and working upward. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, which means pieces are created as flat panels. The finished pieces are then seamed together using a tapestry needle to join the shoulders, sides, and sleeves. The design incorporates cable work, a classic knitting technique that creates raised, twisted rope-like patterns across the fabric. The sweater also includes shaping at the shoulders to create a properly fitted neckline and armhole.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs several key stitches and cable techniques:
- Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) – the primary stitch used throughout, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
- Cr2R (Cross 2 Right) – slip next stitch onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit 1, then knit 1 from cable needle
- Cr2L (Cross 2 Left) – slip next stitch onto cable needle and hold to front of work, knit 1, then knit 1 from cable needle
- C4B (Cable 4 Back) – slip next 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle
- C4F (Cable 4 Front) – slip next 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold to front of work, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle
- Decreases – including skpo (slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over) for shaping
- Embroidery stitches – chain stitch and elongated stitch are included for decorative details using contrasting yarn colors
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Vlada Cable Sweater is knitted using Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran yarn, a premium blend combining the softness of cashmere with the durability of merino wool and nylon. The yarn comes in 50g (1¾oz) balls. Yarn quantities vary by size, ranging from 15 balls to 23 balls of the main color Grey 09 (A), plus 1 ball each of Ruby 610 (B) for embroidery accents and Black 300 (C) for additional embroidery details.
The pattern requires three pairs of knitting needles in different sizes to achieve proper gauge and fit: 4mm (US 6) needles for ribbing, 4.5mm (US 7) needles for transitional sections, and 5mm (US 8) needles for the main body and cable panels. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitches, and a tapestry needle is needed for seaming the finished pieces together and working the embroidery details.
Gauge and Tension
Achieving proper gauge is critical for this project. Over stocking stitch using 5mm (US 8) needles, the pattern specifies 18 stitches and 24 rows to a 10cm (4-inch) square. Over the criss-cross cable panel using the same 5mm (US 8) needles, the gauge is 20 stitches and 24 rows to a 10cm (4-inch) square. These gauge measurements ensure the finished sweater will fit properly and drape correctly.
