Deramores Bunny Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

The Deramores Bunny is a handmade knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry, standing 17cm tall when completed. This beginner-friendly project creates a soft, stuffed bunny companion complete with a coordinating knitted jacket. The finished toy is not suitable for children under 3 years due to small parts including buttons and embellishments.

Craft and Techniques

This knitting pattern combines two fundamental construction techniques. The bunny body is knitted in the round using double-pointed needles or the magic loop method, creating seamless cylindrical sections that are later stuffed and assembled. The jacket, by contrast, is knitted flat using traditional back-and-forth rows on straight needles, then seamed together. Both techniques are essential skills for toy makers and garment constructors.

The pattern emphasizes practical finishing methods. Knitters use the long tail cast on throughout, deliberately leaving 20cm tails for seaming pieces together efficiently. The pull through cast off technique creates a gathered closure by threading the final stitches onto a darning needle, pulling them off the knitting needle, and securing tightly—a method commonly used to close stuffed toy openings.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric visible on the finished bunny and jacket. This fundamental stitch pattern is achieved by alternating knit and purl rows when working flat, or knitting every round when working in the round.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Deramores Studio DK yarn in two colors—1 x 100g Pearl (Yarn A) and 1 x 100g Light Pink (Yarn B). Additional beige DK acrylic yarn (Deramores Studio DK in "Oatmeal") is needed for embroidering the nose
  • Needles: A set of 3.5mm double-pointed needles with minimum 10cm length for knitting the bunny in the round, or a 3.5mm circular needle for magic loop method. A pair of 3.5mm straight needles with minimum 20cm length for knitting the jacket flat
  • Tension: Approximately 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10cm x 10cm square in stockinette stitch on 3.5mm needles
  • Notions and Finishing: 50g toy stuffing, one stitch marker, a darning or tapestry needle for seaming, two 9mm domed black buttons for eyes, one ready-made fluffy white pompom measuring 3cm diameter for the tail, and one 8mm diameter 2-hole pink button for the jacket
