Product Description
Deramores Coco the Yorkshire Terrier Knitted Toy
What Is Being Made
Coco the Yorkshire Terrier is an intermediate-level knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry. This finished stuffed animal measures 20cm tall and 19cm long, making it a compact decorative or play piece. The toy features a two-tone color scheme using Ebony and Oatmeal yarns to capture the characteristic coloring of a Yorkshire Terrier breed dog. Safety features including toy safety eyes and nose are incorporated into the design, with the finished toy recommended for ages 3 and up due to small parts.
Techniques Used
This intermediate knitting project employs several fundamental and intermediate shaping techniques to construct the three-dimensional toy form. Increases are created using the kfb (knit into front and back) method, which adds stitches within a row to expand fabric width. Decreases utilize k2tog (knit 2 stitches together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) techniques to shape and taper sections of the toy. The primary construction method uses mattress stitch for seaming, a technique that creates nearly invisible joins by working through the side edges of stockinette stitch fabric. The toy is stuffed with fiberfill (150g of toy filling) and assembled with safety eyes and a safety nose secured through washers backed with white felt fabric to prevent hardware from poking through the knitted surface.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch (st st): The primary stitch throughout the pattern, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows to produce the smooth, flat fabric characteristic of most knitted toys
- Knit stitch (K): Foundation stitch used in all rows
- Purl stitch (P): Used on wrong-side rows and as directed in pattern sections
- Kfb (knit into front and back): Increase technique that creates two stitches from one, used for shaping body sections
- K2tog (knit 2 stitches together): Decrease technique that combines two stitches into one
- Ssk (slip, slip, knit): Left-leaning decrease technique created by slipping two stitches knitwise and purlwise, then knitting them together through their front loops
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires Deramores Studio DK knitting yarn in two colors: 1 x 100g of Ebony (Yarn A) for the darker areas and 1 x 100g of Oatmeal (Yarn B) for lighter sections. The yarn weight is DK (double knitting), a medium-weight yarn suitable for detailed toy work.
Needles required are 3mm straight knitting needles. The pattern specifies a gauge of 26 stitches x 32 rows = 10cm x 10cm measured over stockinette stitch using 3mm needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished toy dimensions.
Additional materials include toy filling (approximately 150g), two 10mm toy safety eyes, one 18mm toy safety nose, white felt fabric for backing the eye and nose washers, and approximately 1 meter of red ribbon for embellishment. A tapestry or yarn needle is necessary for seaming and finishing work, including securing the safety features and weaving in yarn ends.
