Deramores Dalmatian Knitted Toy

What Is Being Made

The Deramores Dalmatian is an intermediate-level knitted toy dog that stands approximately 22cm tall when completed. This is a charming stuffed animal project designed for knitters with some experience, featuring the classic spotted pattern characteristic of Dalmatian dogs. The finished toy is suitable as a handmade gift or personal keepsake, though it is not recommended for children under 3 years due to small safety components.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The toy is constructed by working flat, meaning all pieces are knitted back and forth on straight needles rather than in the round. The pattern utilizes several essential shaping techniques including:

  • Increases using the kfb (knit into front and back) method to add stitches and create shaping
  • Decreases using k2tog (knit two stitches together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) techniques to reduce stitches and form the toy's contours
  • Seaming to join the flat-knitted pieces together into a three-dimensional form
  • Stuffing and finishing to complete the toy with a darning needle for sewing seams and attaching safety features

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout this pattern is stockinette stitch (abbreviated st st), which creates the smooth, classic knitted fabric surface. Stockinette stitch is achieved by knitting all right-side rows and purling all wrong-side rows, producing the characteristic V-pattern texture. This foundational stitch provides an ideal base for the Dalmatian's spotted design and allows for clean, professional-looking toy construction.

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: The pattern calls for DK (Double Knitting) weight yarn totaling 300g across three colors. Deramores Studio DK is recommended, available in Frost (Yarn A), Ebony (Yarn B), and Lapis (Yarn C), or alternatively Paintbox Yarns Simply DK in Paper White (Yarn A), Pure Black (Yarn B), and Sailor Blue (Yarn C). Each color requires 1 x 100g ball.

Needles: A pair of 3.75mm straight knitting needles (US size 5) are required for this project.

Tension: The pattern specifies a tension of approximately 22 stitches by 28 rows over a 10cm x 10cm square when working stockinette stitch on 3.75mm needles. Achieving correct tension is important for the toy to reach its intended finished size of approximately 22cm in height.

Additional Materials: Toy stuffing is needed to fill the completed pieces, a darning or tapestry needle for seaming and finishing, and 2 x 12mm toy safety eyes to bring the Dalmatian to life. These safety eyes are essential components that make this toy unsuitable for very young children.
