Deramores Easter Bunny and Chick Knitting Pattern

What Is Being Made

This intermediate knitting pattern creates two stuffed toy animals perfect for Easter: a bunny measuring 27cm tall and a chick measuring 17cm tall. The pattern also includes instructions for a small carrot accessory measuring 9cm long (not including leaves). These are finished toys designed as decorative pieces or gifts, with a safety warning that they are not suitable for children under 3 years due to small parts.

Techniques Used

The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. Key techniques include working in stockinette stitch as the primary fabric structure, shaping pieces using increases and decreases to form three-dimensional toy components, and transitioning between straight needles and double-pointed needles for different sections. Knitters will practice assembly methods including stuffing and sewing pieces together with a tapestry needle, attaching embellishments like buttons for eyes, and creating pompom details using a pompom maker.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used throughout, creating a smooth fabric surface on the right side
  • Knit Two Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease stitch used to shape the toys
  • Knit into Front and Back (Kfb): An increase stitch used to add stitches and create shaping
  • Slip, Slip, Knit (Ssk): A left-leaning decrease stitch for shaping
  • Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches for pattern variation

Materials and Supplies

Yarn: Deramores Baby Soft DK yarn in five 100g balls, one each in the colors Snow, Apple, Primrose, Pebble, and Sunset. DK weight yarn provides appropriate drape and stitch definition for toy making.

Needles: A pair of 3.5mm (US4) straight knitting needles with a minimum length of 20cm for working the main pieces, and a pair of 3.5mm (US4) double-pointed needles with a minimum length of 10cm for smaller sections requiring circular knitting.

Additional Supplies: Toy filling totaling 200g for stuffing the completed toys, a darning or tapestry needle for seaming and assembly, four 7mm domed black buttons for eyes (two per toy), a stitch holder for managing active stitches, a 4cm pompom maker for creating decorative details, black embroidery thread or floss (less than 1 metre), and pins for securing pieces during assembly.

Tension and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a tension of 22 stitches by 28 rows over a 10cm by 10cm square in stockinette stitch on 3.5mm needles. Achieving the correct tension ensures the finished toys are appropriately sized: the chick reaches 17cm in height, the bunny stands 27cm tall, and the carrot measures 9cm in length excluding the leaf components.
