Deramores Honey the Bee Knitted Toy

What is Being Made

Deramores Honey the Bee is an intermediate-level knitted stuffed toy designed by Amanda Berry. This finished toy measures 25cm in length and is created by knitting individual pieces that are subsequently sewn together and stuffed. The toy features a bee character with distinct color blocking and embellished details, making it a charming handmade accessory suitable for display or as a gift.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This knitting pattern employs fundamental techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The primary stitch used throughout the construction is stockinette stitch, which is created by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows to produce a smooth, classic fabric surface.

The pattern incorporates essential shaping techniques to form the three-dimensional toy structure:

  • Kfb (Knit into front and back) – an increase technique used to add stitches and expand fabric sections during the body and feature construction
  • K2tog (Knit two together) – a decrease method that reduces stitches to shape and taper sections of the toy
  • Ssk (Slip, slip, knit) – an alternative left-leaning decrease technique where stitches are slipped individually then knitted together through their front loops

The pattern uses standard abbreviations including K (knit), P (purl), st(s) (stitch/stitches), and st st (stockinette stitch). Pieces are cast on with a specified stitch count and increased or decreased systematically to achieve the bee's anatomical shape before being assembled.

Materials and Tools

The Deramores Honey the Bee pattern requires DK weight yarn (also known as double knitting or light worsted weight), with three color options specified:

  • Yarn A: Frost (1 x 100g)
  • Yarn B: Ebony (1 x 100g)
  • Yarn C: Citrine (1 x 100g)

Knitting is worked on 3.5mm straight knitting needles (US size 4). The pattern specifies a tension of approximately 22 stitches by 28 rows over a 10cm x 10cm square worked in stockinette stitch on 3.5mm needles, which is essential to achieve the correct finished toy dimensions.

Additional materials required for completion include toy stuffing to fill the knitted pieces, a darning or tapestry needle for sewing the knitted components together, and two 12mm domed black buttons for eyes. A safety warning notes the toy is not suitable for children under 3 years due to small parts including buttons.
