Product Description
Deramores Larry the Lion Knitted Toy
What is Being Made
Larry the Lion is a beginner-friendly knitted stuffed toy designed by Amanda Berry. The finished toy stands 25cm (10 inches) tall and is suitable for decorative purposes or as a soft companion piece. This is a complete toy project that requires assembly and finishing after the knitted components are completed.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses knitting as the primary craft technique. The pattern is classified as beginner level, making it accessible to knitters who are new to toy construction. The design incorporates fundamental knitting techniques including increasing and decreasing stitches to shape the toy's body and features. Knitters will practice working flat pieces that are subsequently sewn together and stuffed to create a three-dimensional toy form.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs essential knitting stitches suitable for beginners:
- Knit (K) – The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (P) – Used in combination with knit stitches
- Stocking Stitch (St st) – The primary stitch pattern, created by knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side, producing a smooth, classic fabric
- Knit two stitches together (K2tog) – A decrease technique for shaping
- Knit into front and back (Kfb) – An increase technique for expanding the fabric
- Slip, slip, knit (Ssk) – An alternative decrease method
- Loops – Special stitch technique used for creating textured details on the toy
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for Deramores Studio DK yarn in three colors totaling 300g:
- 1 x 100g Citrine (Yarn A) – primary color
- 1 x 100g Frost (Yarn B) – secondary color
- 1 x 100g Ruby (Yarn C) – accent color
- 1m (1 yard) of dark grey yarn for the nose detail
Needles and Tools: A pair of 3.5mm (UK 10-9 / US 4) knitting needles are required. The pattern specifies this needle size is smaller than typically recommended for DK yarn to create a firmer, denser fabric that prevents toy filling from showing through the finished piece.
Additional Supplies: Toy filling for stuffing, white felt fabric for details, 2 black 6mm buttons for eyes, a sewing needle and thread for assembly, a yarn needle for seaming and finishing, and scissors for trimming.
Tension and Sizing
The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 32 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch on 3.5mm needles. Achieving the correct tension is important for the toy to reach its finished size of 25cm (10 inches) tall and to ensure the fabric is sufficiently dense to contain the stuffing properly.
Designer Information
Larry the Lion was designed by Amanda Berry, a knitwear designer who graduated from London College of Fashion with First Class Honours in 2014. Berry specializes in creating knitted toys and has published her designs in magazines and for charitable organizations. Her patterns are available through Deramores.
Safety Note
The finished toy is not suitable for children under 3 years of age due to small parts, including buttons and other embellishments that could present a choking hazard.
