Product Description
Deramores Pig Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
This intermediate knitting pattern creates a charming stuffed toy pig standing 15cm tall, complete with a coordinating knitted sweater. The finished pig is a soft, huggable toy designed by Amanda Berry, a knitwear designer based in Berkshire, England. The pattern includes detailed instructions for constructing the pig's body through knitting in the round, along with a separate flat-knitted sweater to dress the completed toy.
Techniques Used
The Deramores Pig pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. The pig's body is knitted in the round using double-pointed needles or the magic loop method, which creates seamless cylindrical sections ideal for toy construction. The sweater is knitted flat using back-and-forth rows on straight needles, then seamed together. An i-cord technique is used to create the pig's tail on two double-pointed needles. The pattern incorporates long tail cast on for all pieces and uses a pull through cast off method, where yarn is threaded through remaining stitches and pulled tight to close the top of the toy.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout the pattern is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, finished fabric suitable for toy making. The tension is approximately 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10cm square when worked on 3.5mm needles in stockinette stitch. Mattress stitch is used to seam the knitted pieces together, providing a nearly invisible, professional finish that is essential for constructing a cohesive toy.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: Deramores Studio DK yarn in two colors—1 x 100g Light Pink (Yarn A) for the pig's body and 1 x 100g Blue Haze (Yarn B) for the sweater
- Needles: A set of 3.5mm double-pointed needles with a minimum length of 10cm for knitting the pig in the round, and a pair of 3.5mm straight needles with a minimum length of 20cm for knitting the sweater flat
- Stuffing and Notions: 50g toy stuffing to fill the completed pig, two 9mm domed black buttons for eyes, and pink embroidery thread for embroidering the nostrils
- Additional Tools: A stitch marker for tracking rounds, a darning or tapestry needle for seaming pieces together and finishing
Pattern Notes
The pattern recommends leaving approximately 20cm yarn tails after casting on and off, which can be used directly for seaming and finishing the toy. When casting off, a 30cm tail should be cut to allow sufficient length for threading onto a darning needle and securing the final stitches. Important safety note: The finished toy is not suitable for children under 3 years due to small parts, including the button eyes and embroidered details.
