Product Description
Deramores Sheep and Pig Cushions
What Is Being Made
These are knitted toy cushions designed by Amanda Berry, featuring a sheep and a pig. Each finished cushion measures approximately 27cm tall and is stuffed with toy filling to create a soft, huggable accessory. The project produces two distinct character cushions that combine functionality as decorative pieces with the charm of handmade knitted toys.
Craft and Techniques
This is an intermediate-level knitting project that uses fundamental knitting techniques worked flat on straight needles. The construction involves knitting individual pieces separately, then assembling them together using a darning needle and yarn. The project demonstrates essential toy-making skills including shaping, stuffing, and finishing techniques that bring dimension and character to flat knitted fabric.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the project, created by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows to produce a smooth, classic knitted fabric
- Knit Stitch (K): Basic knit stitch used in stockinette and pattern work
- Purl Stitch (P): Used in alternating rows to create stockinette texture
- Knit Two Together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping the cushion pieces
- Knit Front and Back (kfb): An increase stitch that adds stitches for expanding fabric sections
- Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease that provides alternative shaping options
Materials and Tools
The project uses Deramores Studio DK yarn in three colorways: Pearl (Yarn A), Light Pink (Yarn B), and Smoke (Yarn C), with 100g of each color provided. A pair of 3.5mm straight knitting needles (US size 4) are required for the project. The tension is set at approximately 22 stitches by 28 rows over a 10cm square in stockinette stitch on 3.5mm needles. Additional materials include 200g of toy stuffing (100g per cushion), a darning or tapestry needle for assembly and finishing, a stitch holder for managing active stitches, and four 12mm toy safety eyes to bring character and expression to the finished cushions.
