Deramores Teddy Bear Knitted Toy

What is Being Made

The Deramores Teddy Bear is an intermediate-level knitted stuffed toy designed by Amanda Berry. This charming handmade companion measures 19cm tall when sitting and is suitable for display or gifting. The finished toy is not recommended for children under 3 years due to small parts, specifically the safety eyes and embroidered details.

Craft and Technique Overview

This project uses knitting as the primary craft technique to construct a three-dimensional toy. The design employs fundamental knitting methods combined with toy-making assembly techniques to create a soft, cuddly bear with defined features and proportions.

Stitches and Techniques Used

The pattern utilizes essential knitting stitches and shaping techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters:

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st) – The primary stitch used throughout, created by alternating knit and purl rows with the knit side as the right side, providing a smooth, classic fabric finish
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch (Rev st st) – Used selectively, with purl rows facing outward to create textured contrast areas
  • Knit Stitch (K) – Basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
  • Purl Stitch (P) – Used in combination with knit stitches to build the stockinette structure
  • Knit Front and Back (Kfb) – Increase technique used to expand stitch counts for shaping the bear's body and head
  • Knit 2 Together (K2tog) – Decrease technique for tapering and shaping
  • Purl 2 Together (P2tog) – Decrease technique used on purl-side rows
  • Slip, Slip, Knit (Ssk) – Advanced decrease technique for refined shaping
  • Mattress Stitch – Professional seaming method used to join pieces invisibly with the knit side facing, creating neat, durable seams

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for Deramores Studio DK yarn in two colors:

  • 1 x 100g Latte (Yarn A) – primary color for the bear's body
  • 1 x 100g French Rouge (Yarn B) – accent color
  • Black DK yarn (1 metre minimum) – for embroidered nose details; Deramores Studio DK in Ebony is recommended

Needles and Tools:

  • One pair of 2.75mm straight knitting needles – sized to achieve proper tension
  • Darning or tapestry needle – for sewing seams and embroidering details
  • Stitch markers – to track pattern repeats and shaping sections
  • Pins – for holding pieces in position during assembly

Finishing Supplies:

  • Toy filling – 200g total for stuffing the completed bear
  • Two 10mm black toy safety eyes – for secure, child-safe eye attachment

Tension and Sizing

The pattern specifies a tension of 28 stitches by 36 rows measured over a 10x10cm square worked in stockinette stitch using 2.75mm needles. Achieving this tension is essential for the finished bear to measure the intended 19cm height when sitting. Crafters should knit and measure a tension swatch before beginning the main project.
