Product Description
Deramores Three Cosy Cushions
Project Overview
This intermediate knitting pattern by designer Sarah Murray creates three coordinated square cushions, each measuring 43cm. The set features three distinct textured designs worked in complementary colorways using chunky yarn, creating cosy home décor pieces suitable for intermediate knitters.
Cushion Designs
Criss Cross Cushion
The Criss Cross Cushion features a dynamic twisted stitch pattern that creates visual movement across the fabric. This design uses Yarn A (Sterling) and is worked over an odd number of stitches.
Stitches and Techniques: The pattern employs twisting techniques using the T2L (twist 2 left) stitch, where you knit into the back of the 2nd stitch on the left needle, then knit into the front of the 1st stitch before slipping both stitches off together. This creates a crossed, interlocking effect. The pattern alternates between knit and slip stitches on the wrong side to maintain the twisted texture throughout.
Tension: 17½ stitches and 16 rows measure 10x10cm (4x4in) when worked over the criss cross pattern using 6mm needles.
Diamond Cushion
The Diamond Cushion showcases a geometric diamond motif, creating an elegant textured surface. This design uses Yarn C (Frost) and is worked over a multiple of 8 plus 2 stitches.
Stitches and Techniques: The diamond pattern incorporates T2L (twist 2 left) stitches combined with knit stitches to form the diamond shape. The pattern uses slip stitches, including s1p (slip 1 stitch purlwise) and s2p (slip 2 stitches purlwise), on the wrong side rows to shape and define the diamond motifs. Yarn overs may be incorporated to create openwork elements within the pattern.
Tension: 13½ stitches and 20 rows measure 10x10cm (4x4in) when worked over the diamond pattern using 6mm needles.
Materials and Equipment
- Yarn: Deramores Studio Chunky in three colorways: 6 x 100g Sterling (Yarn A), 5 x 100g Jade (Yarn B), and 4 x 100g Frost (Yarn C)
- Needles: 6mm straight needles
- Notions: 3 buttons per cushion (9 buttons total) and 3 x 16-inch cushion pads
Construction Details
Each cushion is cast on using the thumb method with 6mm straight needles. The Criss Cross Cushion begins with 71 stitches, while the Diamond Cushion begins with 58 stitches, allowing each pattern to develop its characteristic texture. The patterns are worked in stockinette stitch with integrated texture stitches, and buttons are used for closures, making these cushions both decorative and functional.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern requires familiarity with basic knitting stitches and the ability to work twisted stitches and slip stitch techniques. The textured patterns demand attention to stitch placement and pattern repeats, making this project suitable for knitters with some experience.
Design Inspiration
Designer Sarah Murray draws inspiration from the Cornish landscape, incorporating twists, cables, and textures that reflect coastal and natural themes. The three colorways—Sterling, Jade, and Frost—evoke the sea and natural environment, allowing crafters to create a cohesive, nature-inspired home décor set.
