What is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern creates a stuffed toy unicorn measuring approximately 30cm long. The pattern offers two colorway options: a bright, multi-colored version or a soft pink-toned version. These finished toys are designed as decorative plush accessories and make suitable handmade gifts. Please note that the finished toys are not suitable for children under 3 years due to small parts including button eyes and toy filling.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental shaping and construction techniques. The pattern uses increases and decreases to create the three-dimensional form of the unicorn body and ears. Knitters will practice color work by changing yarn colors throughout the pattern to create the unicorn's distinctive features. The toy is constructed by knitting individual pieces separately—including the body and ears—which are then assembled together using a tapestry needle. Embroidery stitches are used to add final details with black embroidery thread.

Stitches Used

The pattern primarily uses stockinette stitch (alternating knit and purl rows), which creates the smooth, classic fabric base for the toy. Essential shaping stitches include:

• Kfb (Knit into front and back) – an increase stitch that creates extra stitches for shaping
• K2tog (Knit two stitches together) – a right-leaning decrease
• P2tog (Purl two stitches together) – a decrease worked on wrong-side rows

Materials Required

This pattern calls for DK weight yarn in five coordinating colors. Knitters can choose between two pre-coordinated colorway options:

• Bright Colored Option: Deramores Studio Anti-Pilling DK in Frost, Citrine/Vanilla, Ruby/Light Pink, Lapis/Lavender, and Fir/Rosé (100g of each color)
• Pink Toned Option: Paintbox Yarns Simply DK in Champagne White, Buttercup Yellow/Banana, Rose Red/Ballet Pink, Sailor Blue/Dusty Rose, and Pear Green/Blush Pink (100g of each color)

Knitting is worked on 3mm straight knitting needles. The recommended tension is 26 stitches and 34 rows per 10x10cm square in stockinette stitch on 3mm needles, which helps ensure the finished toy reaches the intended 30cm size.

Additional materials include toy filling for stuffing, a darning or tapestry needle for assembling pieces and weaving in ends, two 10mm domed black buttons for eyes, and black embroidery thread for finishing details.
