Deramores Woodland Creatures Harriet the Hare Knitting Pattern

What Is Being Made

Harriet the Hare is an intermediate-level knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry. This woodland creature stands 32cm tall including the ears, making it a substantial soft toy suitable for display or play. The finished hare features a charming design with distinct body parts that are knitted separately and then assembled using traditional seaming techniques.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs several intermediate-level techniques that add depth and structure to the finished toy:

  • Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric, created by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows to achieve a smooth, uniform surface
  • Kitchener stitch grafting is used to seamlessly join knitted pieces, a hallmark technique for creating polished toy construction
  • Mattress stitch seaming joins the knitted components with invisible, professional-looking seams
  • Increases and decreases (including kfb for front-and-back increases and k2tog for decreases) shape the hare's body and head
  • Casting on and casting off techniques form the foundation and closure of knitted pieces
  • Marking stitches helps track important points during assembly and construction

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches worked in a straightforward manner:

  • Knit (k) stitches
  • Purl (p) stitches
  • Knit two together (k2tog) decreases
  • Knit into front and back (kfb) increases
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases

These stitches are combined to create the stockinette stitch base fabric and to shape individual components of the hare.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for Deramores Studio DK yarn, a double knitting weight (light worsted). Two colors are required:

  • 1 x 100g skein in "Smoke" (grey)
  • 1 x 100g skein in "Pearl" (white)

Needles and Notions: Construction requires 3.75mm straight knitting needles (US 5) for the main fabric. A darning or tapestry needle is essential for sewing the knitted pieces together using mattress stitch and Kitchener stitch grafting. The finished toy is embellished with 2 x 6mm domed black buttons for eyes, adding character and definition to Harriet's face.

Tension and Sizing

The pattern specifies a tension of approximately 22 stitches by 28 rows over a 10cm x 10cm square in stockinette stitch on 3.75mm needles. However, the pattern notes that precise tension is not critical for successful toy construction, allowing for some flexibility in individual gauge variations.
