Dream in Color Tulip Baby Cardigan
What is Being Made
The Dream in Color Tulip Baby Cardigan is a colorful, seamless knit cardigan designed for babies ranging from 6 months to 6 years old. This garment features a vibrant striped design created using eight coordinating colors of Dream in Color "Classy" Worsted Superwash Merino yarn. The cardigan is available in five finished chest measurements: 20 inches (6-9 months), 22 inches (12-18 months), 24 inches (2 years), 28 inches (4 years), and 30 inches (6 years), with corresponding finished lengths to the hip ranging from 11 to 14 inches. The finished cardigan is fastened with five buttons for easy dressing and undressing of infants and toddlers.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques to create a polished, professional-looking garment. The cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down, meaning knitting begins at the neckline and progresses downward, eliminating the need for seaming at the end. The construction is worked in the round for the body and yoke sections, then transitions to working flat for the final shaping and finishing. The stripe pattern is integral to the design, with color changes occurring every 8th or 10th row depending on the size being knitted. The pattern uses the cable cast-on method for adding stitches during increases, which creates a neat, finished edge. Increases are worked using the knit into the front and back of the stitch (kf&b) technique and the slip, slip, knit (ssk) decrease method, both of which are fundamental to seamless garment construction.
Stitches Used
The Tulip Baby Cardigan primarily features stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric that forms the main body of the sweater. The color changes are worked in seed stitch, a textured stitch pattern created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard formation. This seed stitch stripe detail adds visual interest and texture to the color transitions. The pattern also incorporates standard shaping stitches including knit 2 together (k2tog) for right-leaning decreases and slip, slip, knit (ssk) for left-leaning decreases, which are used to shape the armholes and neckline. Stitch markers are used throughout to help track pattern repeats and shaping points.
Materials and Gauge
The Tulip Baby Cardigan is knit using Dream in Color "Classy" Worsted Superwash Merino yarn in eight distinct colors: VM110 Cool Fire, VM120 Giant Peach, VM130 Strange Harvest, VM140 Spring Tickle, VM150 Happy Forest, VM160 Blue Lagoon, VM170 Summer Sky, and VM180 Visual Purple. The yarn is a worsted-weight superwash merino, making it durable, easy to care for, and suitable for baby garments. The pattern requires US #5 and US #7 circular needles in 32-inch length, as well as US #5 and US #7 double-pointed needles for working smaller circumferences. The working gauge is 4.5 stitches to the inch on the larger US #7 needles in stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. Additional notions include stitch markers, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, scrap yarn for holding stitches, and five buttons for the cardigan closure.
Color Stripe Sequence
The striped design progresses from the top of the cardigan downward in the following color order: Cool Fire, Giant Peach, Strange Harvest, Spring Tickle, Happy Forest, Blue Lagoon, Summer Sky, and Visual Purple. Color changes occur on the wrong side of the work and are worked in seed stitch, creating a textured transition between each color band. The frequency of color changes varies by size: smaller sizes change colors every 8 rows, while larger sizes change every 10 rows, allowing the proportions of the stripes to remain visually balanced across different garment sizes.
