Dream in Color Rocketry Colorful Baby Cardigan

What Is Being Made

The Dream in Color Rocketry is a vibrant, seamless baby cardigan designed for infants aged 6 to 9 months with a finished chest measurement of 20 inches and finished length of 11 inches. This top-down cardigan features a striking multi-color striped design created using six coordinating colors of Dream in Color Classy Worsted Superwash Merino yarn: Beach Fog, Blue Lagoon, Happy Forest, Strange Harvest, Lipstick Lava, and Visual Purple. The cardigan is buttoned at the front and constructed as a single garment with no seaming required.

Construction Techniques

The Rocketry cardigan employs several advanced knitting techniques to achieve its seamless construction and professional finish:

  • Top-Down Construction: The sweater is worked from the neck downward in one continuous piece, allowing for easy fitting adjustments and eliminating the need for seaming at completion.
  • Seamless Knitting: By working the entire garment as one unit without separating pieces, the cardigan achieves a polished, professional appearance with no visible seams.
  • Worked in the Round and Flat: The pattern combines circular needle work for efficiency with flat sections as needed for the cardigan's construction, utilizing both 32-inch circular needles and double-pointed needles.
  • Striped Colorwork: Colors are changed every 10th row on the wrong side of the work using a specific technique that integrates new colors smoothly into the fabric, creating horizontal stripes throughout the body of the cardigan.
  • Cable Cast-On Method: The pattern uses the cable cast-on technique for adding stitches, providing a neat and elastic edge ideal for garment construction.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Rocketry cardigan utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and shaping techniques:

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the body, creating a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side and bumpy texture on the wrong side.
  • 2x1 Ribbing: Used for edgings and finishing, this ribbed pattern alternates knit and purl stitches to create an elastic, fitted edge that recovers well after stretching.
  • Knit Front and Back (kf&b): An increase technique used to add stitches for shaping the cardigan's silhouette.
  • Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease used for shaping and creating symmetrical decreases throughout the pattern.
  • Knit 2 Together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease that works in conjunction with ssk to create balanced shaping.
  • Yarn Over (yo): Creates decorative eyelets or lace elements within the pattern structure.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Dream in Color Rocketry cardigan is constructed using Dream in Color Classy Worsted Superwash Merino yarn, a durable and easy-care fiber ideal for baby garments. The yarn quantities required for each color are: 210 yards of Beach Fog (Color A), 160 yards of Blue Lagoon (Color B), 150 yards of Happy Forest (Color C), 130 yards of Strange Harvest (Color D), 270 yards of Lipstick Lava (Color E), and 180 yards of Visual Purple (Color F). The worsted weight yarn is worked at a gauge of 4.5 stitches to the inch on the larger needles in stockinette stitch.

Needles and Notions

Construction requires US #5 and US #7 circular needles in 32-inch length, along with US #5 and US #7 double-pointed needles for working smaller circumferences. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, scrap yarn for holding stitches, and five buttons for the cardigan's front closure.

Design Features

The Rocketry cardigan's design emphasizes color and visual interest through its carefully planned stripe sequence. Colors progress from the top down in the order of Beach Fog, Blue Lagoon, Happy Forest, Strange Harvest, Lipstick Lava, and Visual Purple, with Strange Harvest designated as the border color. This thoughtful color arrangement creates a rainbow effect that appeals to
