What is Being Made

The Ebba collection features a coordinating hat and wristlets set designed by Claudia Wersing. The hat is a fitted, crown-shaping design with a finished circumference of 21¼ inches (54cm) and length of 9¾ inches (25cm) unstretched, suitable for head sizes 19¾–22 inches (50–56cm). The wristlets are smaller cylindrical pieces with a circumference of approximately 8¾ inches (22cm) and length of approximately 5¼ inches (13cm). Both pieces are part of the Cosy Collection and are worked in the round for a seamless construction.

Techniques Used

Fair Isle Colorwork: The hat features a stranded colorwork technique using two colors from Juniper Moon Farm Fourteen yarn. The fair isle pattern is worked in stockinette stitch throughout the main body of the hat, with an 18-stitch pattern repeat that is repeated 5 times across each round.

In-the-Round Knitting: Both the hat and wristlets are knitted in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles. This method creates seamless, tubular garments without the need for seaming.

Crown Shaping: The hat features a structured crown shaping technique using decreases. After the colorwork section is complete, decreases are worked strategically to taper the crown. The pattern uses slip-stitch decreases (sl1, k1, psso) and knit-two-together (k2tog) decreases positioned before stitch markers, which are placed every 13 stitches to ensure even distribution. The decreases are repeated in a two-round pattern until the remaining stitches are gathered and secured.

Pompon Finishing: A pompon approximately 2½ inches (6cm) in diameter is created using both yarn colors held together and attached to the crown of the hat for a decorative finishing touch.

Stitches Used

• Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout both the hat and wristlets, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
• Knit Stitch (k): The fundamental stitch used in stockinette and shaping
• Slip Stitch (sl): Used in combination with knit stitches to create decorative decreases during crown shaping

Materials

Yarn: The pattern calls for Juniper Moon Farm Fourteen, a worsted-weight yarn. Two 50-gram balls are required: one in color 17 Goldsire (A) and one in color 15 Ivory (B). The two colors are used together to create the fair isle pattern on the hat and are also held together when constructing the finishing pompon.

Needles and Notions: Size US 10 (6mm) circular needles measuring 16 inches (40cm) long are used for the initial cast-on and main body work. A set of five size US 10 (6mm) double-pointed needles is required for the crown shaping section when the stitch count decreases and circular needles become impractical. Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and decrease placement throughout the project.

Gauge and Difficulty

The pattern is rated at intermediate difficulty level. The gauge is 16 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches (10cm) when worked in patterned stockinette stitch using US 10 (6mm) needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements, particularly for the fitted hat design.
