Ella Rae Lalana Shawl

What Is Being Made

The Ella Rae Lalana Shawl is a seamless, flat-worked triangular wrap designed by Zabeth Loisel-Weiner. This knitted shawl features finished measurements of approximately 27 inches wide by 58 inches in length, making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping.

Techniques Used

This shawl is constructed using seamless knitting techniques, meaning the piece is worked as one continuous fabric without seams. The shawl is worked flat on circular needles rather than in the round, allowing for a traditional wrap construction. The design incorporates strategic increases and decreases to shape the triangular silhouette, with decreases worked at regular intervals to create the proper proportions.

Stitches Used

The Lalana Shawl features two primary stitch patterns:

  • Alternating Cluster Stitch: A textured stitch pattern that creates visual interest through the combination of knit and purl stitches arranged in a clustered formation
  • Basketweave Pattern: Worked over a multiple of 8 stitches plus 1, this pattern is essentially the same as the alternating cluster pattern with one key modification—the cluster stitches are worked as purl stitches instead of knit stitches. The basketweave pattern repeats over 8 rows, alternating between rows of *P1, k3* repeats and rows of *P5, k3* repeats, creating a woven appearance

Additional stitch techniques include slipped stitches (worked with yarn in front and yarn in back), yarn overs for increases, and knit two together or purl two together decreases.

Materials and Tools

The Lalana Shawl requires 3 balls of 100g each of Ella Rae Denim DK yarn in shade 104 Bleach Wash, providing approximately 300 grams of yarn for the complete project. The recommended needle is one size US 5/3.75mm circular needle measuring 40 inches in length, or a size adjusted to obtain proper gauge. For optimal results, the pattern notes that LYKKE® needles are recommended.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in either the Alternating Cluster Stitch or Basketweave Pattern using a US 5/3.75mm needle. Checking gauge before beginning is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
