Product Description

Ella Rae’s 1139-06 Greg Hat & Scarf is a knitting pattern for a unisex matching set knit in a slip stitch cable design using Cashmereno Aran. The hat is knit flat from the bottom up and seamed. Ella Rae Cashmereno Aran is a beautiful blend of Merino wool, acrylic, and cashmere that is soft enough to be worn next to the skin and is available in an array of rich hues and lovely neutrals. Think cushy cowls, warm hats, and comfortable sweaters that knit up quickly. Best of all, it’s machine-washable, so you never have to worry about caring for your finished project. The slip stitch cable pattern is in written form only.

Ella Rae Greg Hat & Scarf Pattern Summary

Project Overview

The Ella Rae Greg Hat & Scarf is a coordinated two-piece knitting set featuring luxurious Cashmereno Aran yarn in a sophisticated two-color colorway. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating both a fitted hat and an oversized scarf that work beautifully together as a matched accessory collection.

Hat Details

The hat is designed with a lower edge circumference measuring 18½ inches (47 cm) or 20½ inches (52 cm), offering two size options for different head measurements. The hat is constructed using a bottom-up approach, beginning at the lower edge and working upward to the crown.

Scarf Details

The completed scarf measures an impressive 88½ inches (225 cm) long and 10½ inches (26.5 cm) wide, making it a substantial accessory perfect for layering and styling. Like the hat, the scarf is worked in the same coordinating two-color pattern system.

Construction Techniques

  • Seamed and Seamless Options: The pattern employs both seamed and seamless construction methods throughout the design
  • Cable Work: Decorative cable stitches including Cr5R (5-stitch right cable cross) and Cr3R/Cr3L (3-stitch right and left cable crosses) add textural interest and visual depth
  • Stripes: A two-color stripe pattern alternates between yarn A and yarn B throughout both garments, creating visual rhythm and contrast
  • Worked Flat: Sections are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for specific shaping and pattern placement
  • Slip Stitch Colorwork: The pattern incorporates slip stitches with yarn held in back (wyab) and yarn held in front (wyaf) to create intricate color patterning without traditional stranding

Stitch Techniques

The pattern utilizes a sophisticated combination of knit stitches, purl stitches, cable crosses, and slip stitches to create a complex, multi-textured fabric. The slip stitch colorwork technique allows the two yarn colors to interact without the bulk of traditional Fair Isle or stranded colorwork, resulting in a refined, elegant appearance suitable for the luxurious yarn weight.

Materials Required

Yarn: Ella Rae Cashmereno Aran, a premium aran-weight yarn in two coordinating shades:

  • Shade 17 Keystone (Yarn A): 1 x 100g ball for hat; 3 x 100g balls for scarf
  • Shade 16 Graphite (Yarn B): 1 x 100g ball for hat; 3 x 100g balls for scarf

Needles and Notions: The pattern calls for both US 6 (4 mm) and US 8 (5 mm) needles in pairs, allowing for gauge control and potential ribbing or edging variations. A cable needle is required for executing the cable cross stitches throughout the pattern.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 25½ stitches and 38 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) measured over the stitch pattern using US 8 (5 mm) needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and ensuring the hat fits appropriately at the specified circumferences.

Pattern Complexity

This is an intermediate to advanced knitting pattern requiring familiarity with cable techniques, slip stitch colorwork, and the ability to follow multi-row repeat instructions. The pattern features a repeating motif system that creates visual interest while maintaining consistency across both the hat and scarf pieces.
