Ella Rae Mavis Sweater

What is Being Made

The Mavis is a children's pullover sweater designed by Ursula McGrath, available in five sizes to fit chest measurements of 22 (24, 26, 28, 30) inches / 56 (61, 66, 71, 76) centimeters, suitable for ages 2-3 through 10-11 years. The finished garment features an actual chest measurement of 24 (26, 28, 30, 32) inches / 61 (66, 71, 76, 81) centimeters with a length ranging from 14 to 20 inches / 36 to 51 centimeters depending on size. Sleeve length varies from 9 to 15 inches / 23 to 38 centimeters across the size range.

Knitting Techniques

The Mavis sweater is constructed using a bottom-up approach, with pieces worked flat on straight needles and subsequently seamed together. This traditional construction method allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and make adjustments as needed. The pattern incorporates cable twisting as a primary design element, with cables crossed on row 13 and then repeated every eighth row throughout the body of the sweater.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Mavis features several key stitches and techniques:

  • Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base, creating a smooth, classic knit surface
  • Cable stitches are the signature design element, specifically C8F (cable 8 front) and C8B (cable 8 back), which are created by slipping four stitches onto a cable needle and holding them at the front or back of the work before knitting the next four stitches from the left-hand needle, then knitting the four stitches from the cable needle
  • Double moss stitch (abbreviated as Db.ms.st) is used on the side edges and center sections, providing textural contrast and helping define the cable panels
  • Knit and purl stitches are combined to frame the cables with ribbed sections
  • Make one purlwise (M1P) increases are used for shaping
  • Purl two together (p2tog) decreases are incorporated during shoulder shaping

Materials and Tools

The Mavis is knitted using Ella Rae Cashmereno Sport yarn in the shade 303 Cosmic Carnival. The yardage requirement is 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) x 50-gram balls depending on the size selected. Two pairs of knitting needles are required: US 3 / 3.25mm needles for ribbed edgings and US 5 / 3.75mm needles for the main fabric. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable twists that define this design. The recommended gauge is 21 stitches by 32 rows over a 4-inch / 10-centimeter square when working stockinette stitch on US 5 / 3.75mm needles.
