Product Description

The Elsebeth Lavold Beech Leaf Pullover is a stunning lace sweater that adds graceful style to a wide range of outfits. Layer this pullover on top of a tank in the spring and a long sleeve tee in the fall for a beautiful look that's elegant and adds just enough warmth too. A drop-shoulder silhouette gives this sweater a laid-back feel that's comfortable to wear, but also looks put together paired with everything from workwear to weekend casual outfits. The Beech Leaf Pullover is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and seamed, with a crew neckline and three-quarter length sleeves. Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool is a longtime crafter favorite with its blend of wool, silk, and nylon that's available in a wide range of gorgeous heathered colors. With a slight tweedy look, Silky Wool adds a subtle texture to finished projects and its versatile fiber blend is comfortable to wear through much of the year. Lace pattern is both charted and written out.

What is Being Made

The Beech Leaf Pullover is a knitted sweater designed by Sandi Prosser, sized for X-Small through 3X (bust measurements ranging from 36 to 71 inches). This pullover features an elegant lace pattern inspired by beech leaves, creating an intricate and sophisticated garment suitable for various body sizes.

Techniques Used

This design employs multiple knitting techniques to achieve its finished structure:

  • Bottom-up construction: The sweater is knitted from the lower edge upward, beginning with cast-on stitches at the hem
  • Worked flat: The main body pieces are knitted on straight needles in flat rows rather than in continuous rounds
  • Worked in the round: Circular needles are used for certain sections, allowing for seamless construction where appropriate
  • Seamed construction: Finished pieces are sewn together using seaming techniques to join the front, back, and sleeves
  • Lace patterning: The design incorporates an intricate lace motif throughout, creating openwork sections that showcase the beech leaf theme

Stitches Used

The Beech Leaf Pullover utilizes fundamental and decorative knitting stitches to create its distinctive appearance:

  • Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches: Form the foundational structure and create texture contrast
  • Yarn overs (yo): Create the openwork lace elements essential to the beech leaf pattern
  • Decreases (ssk and k2tog): Shaped decreases that balance the yarn overs and form the leaf motifs. SSK (slip, slip, knit) creates a left-leaning decrease, while k2tog (knit two together) creates a right-leaning decrease
  • Ribbing (k1, p1): Used for the welts and cuffs to provide elasticity and structure at the edges
  • Make one (M1): An increase stitch referenced in the pattern glossary for shaping

Lace Pattern Details

The primary lace pattern repeats over 48 rows and creates the characteristic beech leaf design. The pattern features symmetrical decreases and yarn overs arranged to form leaf shapes, with purl stitches serving as anchor points. Rows 25 through 47 contain the most complex lace work, with the pattern repeating in sections. Row 48 establishes a reset row with knit and purl stitches (k1, *p7, k1; rep from * to end), allowing the eye to rest before the pattern begins again. The lace pattern is worked over a gauge of 22 stitches and 29 rows per 4 inches when blocked.

Materials

The Beech Leaf Pullover requires the following materials:

  • Yarn: Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool in shade 217 Fallow. Quantities range from 5 hanks (250 grams total) for the smallest size to 10 hanks (500 grams total) for the largest size. Each hank weighs 50 grams
  • Needles: One pair of US 6/4mm straight needles for working flat sections, and one US 6/4mm circular needle measuring 16 inches (40cm) in length for in-the-round sections
  • Notions: Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping, and stitch holders to temporarily hold stitches during construction

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern requires a gauge of 22 stitches and 29 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) over the lace pattern when blocked using US 6/4mm needles. Checking gauge before beginning is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. The sweater features a ribbed welts and cuffs for structure, with the main body showcasing the lace pattern throughout. Finished bust measurements range from 36 inches (91cm) for X-Small to 71 inches (180cm) for 3X, with length measurements between 20½ and 22½ inches (52 to 57 centimeters) depending on size.

The pattern size is off. No DKmyarn I could find works for the pattern except the yarn it was designed for.
