Euro Joey Onesie: Knitted Baby Romper

What Is Being Made

The Euro Joey Onesie is a knitted baby romper, also called a joey romper, designed for infants and toddlers. This one-piece garment combines shorts-style legs with a fitted bodice, featuring button closures and adjustable length options. The design comes in five size options ranging from newborn through age 2-3 years, with chest measurements from 36cm to 56cm (14 to 22 inches).

Knitting Techniques Used

This romper is constructed using bottom-up knitting, meaning the garment is worked from the lower edges upward toward the neckline. The pattern employs seamed construction, with individual pieces knitted separately and then joined together using seaming techniques. All pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, creating distinct front and back panels that are later assembled.

The neckband is worked using a pick-up method, where stitches are picked up along the finished neck edge and worked in ribbing to create a neat, finished neckline. Shaping is achieved through strategic decreases worked at specific intervals to create the fitted bodice and leg openings.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern utilizes two primary stitch structures:

  • 1x1 Ribbing: Used for the leg cuffs and neckband. This alternating knit and purl pattern creates an elastic, stretchy fabric that hugs the body. The ribbing is worked by alternating knit one stitch with purl one stitch across each row.
  • Stocking Stitch (St-St): The main stitch pattern for the body of the romper. Stocking stitch is created by knitting all stitches on right-side rows and purling all stitches on wrong-side rows, producing the classic smooth, V-textured fabric commonly seen in fitted knitwear.

Additional stitch techniques include make one (M1) increases, worked by picking up the loop between stitches and working into the back of the loop to add stitches invisibly, and strategic decreases to shape the armholes, neckline, and leg openings.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Euro Joey Onesie is designed to be knitted with Babe Softcotton Chunky yarn in Shade 03. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 2 balls (100g each) for the newborn size to 4 balls for the largest 2-3 year size. This chunky-weight cotton yarn provides a soft, breathable fabric ideal for babies and toddlers.

Two needle sizes are required to create proper fabric tension and structure:

  • 6mm (US10) knitting needles: Used for the main body of the romper worked in stocking stitch. The pattern specifies a tension of 14 stitches and 20 rows over 10cm (4 inches) using these needles.
  • 5mm (US8) knitting needles: Used for the ribbed leg cuffs and neckband, which require smaller needles to create the elastic, fitted ribbed texture.

Additional notions include stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches during construction, and 3 to 5 buttons (depending on size) for the front closure of the romper.

Construction Details

The romper begins with casting on stitches for the right leg using the 5mm needles and working in 1x1 ribbing for the leg cuff. The pattern then transitions to the larger 6mm needles and stocking stitch for the main body. Shaping occurs through decreases worked at the leg edges and neck to create the fitted silhouette. The legs are worked to a specified length before casting off, with the pattern noting that full length is adjustable to accommodate different proportions. Shoulder seams are joined using seaming techniques, and the neckband is completed by picking up stitches along the finished neck edge and working in ribbing with the smaller needles.
