Euro Ruby Cardigan and Hat
What is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern set includes two coordinating garments for babies: a button-front cardigan and a matching hat. The Euro Ruby collection features the Babe Softcotton Chunky yarn in Shade 11, creating soft, durable pieces suitable for newborns through age 3. The cardigan is available in five sizes ranging from newborn to 2-3 years, with corresponding chest measurements from 36cm to 56cm (14 to 22 inches). The hat is designed to fit an average baby's head for the age indicated on the pattern.
Techniques Used
Both garments are constructed using bottom-up knitting, meaning pieces are worked from the lower edges upward. The cardigan is worked flat on straight needles, with individual pieces created separately and then seamed together for a finished appearance. Cable techniques feature prominently in the design, adding visual interest and texture to the finished pieces. The pattern includes raglan shaping for the cardigan sleeves, creating a classic fitted silhouette.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs several fundamental knitting stitches to create depth and visual appeal:
- Garter Stitch (G-St.) – Created by knitting every row, this stitch produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges
- Stocking Stitch (St-St.) – Alternating knit and purl rows to create a smooth, classic stockinette surface
- 1x1 Rib – Alternating knit and purl stitches in single columns, providing elasticity at cuffs, necklines, and waistbands
- Cable Stitches – C4B (cable 4 back) and C4F (cable 4 front) techniques, created by slipping stitches onto a cable needle and crossing them over working stitches to form twisted rope-like textures
Materials and Tools
The pattern specifies Babe Softcotton Chunky yarn in Shade 11 as the primary material. Yarn quantities vary by size: the cardigan requires 2 to 3 balls of 100g each, while the hat requires 1 ball of 100g. This chunky-weight yarn works quickly and creates a soft, breathable fabric ideal for babies.
Knitting needles required include one pair of 6mm (US10) needles for the main fabric and one pair of 5mm (US8) needles for ribbed sections, allowing for proper tension control. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitch techniques. The cardigan pattern calls for 4 to 6 buttons depending on size, providing secure closures for the front opening.
Gauge and Tension
Achieving correct tension is critical for proper fit. The pattern specifies 14 stitches and 26 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in garter stitch and 14 stitches and 20 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch using 6mm (US10) needles. Knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their needle size produces the correct gauge, adjusting needle size as needed.
