Project Overview

The Sidestep Cowl is a seamless, bottom-up knit cowl featuring two-color brioche knitting with alternating gradient yarns and a distinctive stepped columnar stripe pattern. This cozy neckwear combines brioche texture with color work to create a soft, squishy accessory ideal for everyday wear.

What Is Being Made

A circular cowl (neck warmer) measuring approximately 36 inches in diameter and 8.5 inches in height. The cowl is worked seamlessly in the round, eliminating the need for seaming, and features a textured brioche construction that creates exceptional softness and elasticity.

Techniques Used

• Two-Color Brioche Knitting: The primary construction method, alternating brioche knit and brioche purl stitches between two colors to create dimensional texture and visual interest
• Seamless, In-the-Round Construction: Worked continuously on circular needles to create a tubular fabric without seams
• Stepped Columnar Pattern: A structured stripe design where knit and purl columns align in alternating sections, creating a visual stepping effect
• Color Blocking with Ombré Gradients: Four separate Freia Yarns Ombré Minikins in coordinating colors (Lucky Penny, Hayride, Chaparral, and Damask) are worked sequentially to build the striped design

Stitches Used

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: Four Freia Yarns Ombré Minikins (25 grams each, approximately 107 yards per ball). The pattern is shown in colors Lucky Penny, Hayride, Chaparral, and Damask. These are US Merino minikins, providing the softness and squishiness characteristic of merino fiber.

Needles and Notions: US 4 / 3.5mm circular needles up to 24 inches in length, and one row marker for tracking pattern repeats.

Gauge: 16 rounds and 21 stitches over 4 inches before blocking. Gauge is measured in brioche pattern.

Pattern Notes and Considerations

This pattern is designed by Tina Whitmore and assumes knitters have basic familiarity with brioche knitting techniques. While not classified as a difficult project, brioche experience is recommended; online video tutorials are suggested for refresher instruction. The pattern is engineered to use nearly all yardage from each minikin, so gauge variations may require minor adjustments. The cowl will grow and improve with blocking, which is recommended for optimal drape and finished dimensions.
