What Is Being Made

Inspired by the two rivers running through Portland—the Willamette and the Columbia—these socks feature decorative wavy cables that run along the leg and foot. Sized for Women's Medium with an 8-inch foot circumference, these socks are ideal for intermediate knitters who enjoy cable work and want to create a distinctive, patterned sock with visual interest.

Techniques Used

The Lazy River Socks employ several key knitting techniques that define their construction and wearability:

• Seamless, Top-Down Construction: The socks are worked from the cuff downward in a continuous seamless manner, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a comfortable, smooth fit.
• Worked in the Round: Using either a set of two circular needles or a set of double-pointed needles (dpns), the socks are knitted in continuous rounds, which is the standard method for sock knitting and ensures even tension and consistent stitch definition.
• Cable Work: Wavy cables are integrated into both the front (instep) and back (heel) panels of the sock, requiring a cable needle to create the twisted, three-dimensional texture that gives these socks their distinctive appearance.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches combined in structured panels:

Materials Required

The Lazy River Socks require specific materials to achieve the correct gauge and fit:

• Yarn: Approximately 400 yards of fingering-weight yarn. The sample shown uses Cascade Heritage in color #5615.
• Needles: Size 1 (2.25mm) needles are required to achieve the correct gauge. Knitters may choose either a set of two size 1 circular needles or a set of size 1 double-pointed needles (dpns), depending on personal preference. A cable needle in the same size is also necessary for working the cable stitches.
• Additional Tools: A yarn needle for weaving in ends upon completion.
• Gauge: 32 stitches and 44 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished sock dimensions.

Pattern Structure

The pattern begins with casting on 70 stitches and dividing them strategically across the needles. When using dpns, stitches are distributed as 17 stitches on each of needles 1 and 2 (instep stitches on the front of the leg and top of the foot) and 18 stitches on each of needles 3 and 4 (heel stitches on the back of the leg and bottom of the foot). Alternatively, when using two circular needles, 34 stitches are placed on needle 1 for the instep and 36 stitches on needle 2 for the heel. The pattern is worked in continuous rounds without twisting, beginning with an 8-round ribbed cuff that establishes the elastic edge. Following the ribbing, separate front and back panel patterns are worked simultaneously, with the front panel featuring one cable design and the back panel featuring a complementary cable design, creating the characteristic wavy cable effect that inspired the sock's name.
