The Gloom Sweater is a knitted pullover garment designed by Georgia Farrell, offered in nine size options to fit chest measurements ranging from 71-76 cm (28-30 inches) to 152-157 cm (60-62 inches). The finished garment chest measurements span from 90.5 cm to 174.5 cm, accommodating a wide range of body sizes from children through to adults. This design features a funnel neck construction and is suitable for knitters with advanced beginner to intermediate skill levels.
The Gloom Sweater employs several key knitting techniques to create its structure and visual interest. The pattern incorporates stitch pattern work that is maintained consistently across the back, front, and sleeve pieces throughout the garment construction. Incremental increases are worked at the sleeve edges to shape the sleeve cap, with increases occurring at varying intervals depending on the size being knitted—ranging from every 4th row to every 12th row. Shaped armholes and sleeve caps are created through strategic cast-offs and decreases, with decreases worked both in straight rows and alternating rows to achieve a fitted silhouette. The pattern also includes pressing and finishing techniques as part of the making-up process to achieve the final garment appearance.
The primary stitch pattern combines knit stitches with slipped stitches worked purlwise with yarn held at the front of the work. The pattern sequence is established as: knit 3 stitches, slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front, and repeat this four-stitch unit across rows. This creates a textured, slip-stitch pattern that adds visual depth and interest to the finished fabric while maintaining structural integrity. The pattern is worked consistently across all pieces of the garment, creating a cohesive design.
The Gloom Sweater is constructed using Rowan Fine Tweed Haze yarn, a 50-gram weight yarn photographed in the colorway Vale 012. Yarn quantities range from 5 balls for the smallest sizes to 9 balls for the largest size. The pattern is worked on 4mm (US 6) needles, utilizing one pair of straight needles for flat pieces and a 4mm circular needle no longer than 40 cm for any sections requiring circular knitting, such as the funnel neck. The recommended tension is 21 stitches and 38 rows to 10 centimeters when measured over the slip-stitch pattern using 4mm needles, making this a relatively fine gauge that creates a refined fabric suitable for the detailed stitch pattern.
The back and front pieces are worked identically and begin with casting on between 95 and 183 stitches depending on size. The sleeves are cast on with 43 to 51 stitches and increased gradually to create the proper sleeve width, with final sleeve stitch counts ranging from 71 to 107 stitches before the sleeve cap shaping begins. Sleeve length is consistent at approximately 43 to 45 centimeters across most sizes. The sleeve cap is shaped through a series of cast-offs at the beginning of rows followed by decreases worked at the edges, with the final 17 stitches cast off to complete the sleeve. The funnel neck is created by leaving stitches on a holder at the neckline, allowing for completion after the main garment pieces are assembled.
