Grove Sweater in Rowan Cotton Glace

What is Being Made

The Grove Sweater is a knitted pullover garment designed by Chloe Thurlow. This intermediate-level sweater is available in nine sizes, with bust measurements ranging from 71-76 cm to 152-157 cm (28-30 inches to 60-62 inches). The actual finished bust measurements of the garment range from 90.5 cm to 171.5 cm, providing options for various body types and fit preferences.

Craft and Techniques

The Grove Sweater is created using the knitting craft. This project is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The construction involves shaping at the shoulders and neckline, which requires understanding of garment shaping principles and stitch manipulation.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The pattern employs patterned stitchwork throughout the garment, with specific stitch instructions provided for the back and front pieces. The sweater features structured shoulder shaping, accomplished through strategic cast-off sequences at the beginning of rows. The neckline is shaped through a combination of decreasing stitches at the neck edge over multiple rows and cast-off sequences. A neckband finish is incorporated, worked from stitches held during the main garment construction. The pattern uses stitch holders to manage stitches during the shaping process.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Rowan Cotton Glacé in 50-gram balls. The quantity required varies by size, ranging from 13 to 16 balls depending on the chosen size. The photographed sample is shown in the colorway Bleached 726.

Needles and Accessories: The project requires 2¾mm (US 2) needles for initial cast-on and ribbing, and 3¼mm (US 3) needles for the main pattern work. A 2¾mm (US 2) circular needle no longer than 80 cm is needed for the neckband. Stitch holders are used as extras to manage stitches during construction.

Tension and Gauge

The pattern is worked to a tension of 29 stitches and 34 rows over 10 cm, measured over the patterned fabric using 3¼mm (US 3) needles in an unstretched state. Achieving correct tension is essential for the garment to fit properly across the range of available sizes.
