Hella Sweater in Juniper Moon Farm Patagonia

What is Being Made

The Hella sweater is a Nordic-inspired knitted pullover designed by Claudia Wersing as part of The Nordic Collection. This intermediate-level garment is available in five sizes ranging from Small to 2X-Large, with finished bust measurements from 33 inches (84 cm) to 48¾ inches (124 cm). The sweater features a length to shoulder of approximately 30¾ to 32¼ inches (78 to 82 cm), making it a standard crew-neck pullover suitable for everyday wear.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Hella sweater employs several key knitting techniques to create its distinctive texture and structure. The pattern utilizes ribbed stitch patterns as primary design elements, combining two different rib variations to create visual interest and ensure proper fit. Reverse Stockinette stitch is worked into sections of the design, creating a subtle textured contrast by purling on right-side rows and knitting on wrong-side rows. The construction incorporates selvage stitches at seam edges, which are worked into the finished measurements to ensure clean, professional finishing. The pattern is worked primarily in the round using circular needles, a technique that minimizes seaming and creates a seamless garment body.

Stitches Used

The pattern features two primary ribbed stitch patterns. Rib1 is worked over a stitch multiple of 16, alternating 10 knit stitches with 6 purl stitches across each row. Rib2 is a more traditional 2x2 rib worked over a stitch multiple of 4 (plus 2 stitches when worked flat, or divisible by 4 when worked in rounds), creating evenly spaced vertical columns of texture. These ribs are combined with Reverse Stockinette stitch sections and Garter stitch elements to build the complete sweater structure. The pattern also incorporates standard knitting abbreviations including knit (k), purl (p), decreases (dec), and pattern repeats (rep).

Materials and Needles

The Hella sweater is knitted using Juniper Moon Farm Patagonia yarn in color 107 Aquamarine. Yardage requirements are 4 hanks for the Small size, 5 hanks for Medium and Large sizes, and 6 hanks for X-Large and 2X-Large sizes, with each hank weighing 100 grams. The pattern calls for US 2 or US 3 (3mm) circular needles—a 31-inch (80 cm) needle for working the body and a 16-inch (40 cm) needle for smaller circumference sections such as necklines and cuffs. The pattern notes recommend using LYKKE® needles for best results. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in Rib1 stitch using the specified needle size, ensuring proper fit and drape of the finished garment.
